His parents, along with Lady Anneliese, and the Prices, were meeting with the very lovely Princess Mariette to talk about the future of Vasile. Ansel was excused from attending the meetings as a mere heir, but he knew his mother would tell him all that occurred once they were freed from the convened gathering. Left to his own devices as even his sisters abandoned him in favor of other occupations, he decided to explore the castle.
Ansel's memory of the castle in Vanderhall was vague at best thanks to the passage of more than a few years since his last visit. He had been a guest there once or twice in his early years, but during the intervening time, there was little interaction between his family and the Romanovs. He wasn't sure what to think of it except that maybe it was not meant to be. Certainly he was very sorry that his mother's family had come under such cowardly attack, that far too many lives were lost because of someone's grudge or greed; Ansel was not heartless, and he disdained that kind of conflict resolution. Women, aged men and children should be left out of it - problems were best settled between men, like men.
Walking along the halls, his footsteps echoed hollowly, making the castle feel empty and lonely to Ansel's active imagination. The perfect setting for ghosts to drift to and fro, haunting the halls in death that they once occupied in life. Did they still dance in the ballroom, or look longingly to the foods in the kitchen? Were there girl-ghosts who whispered and giggled behind their hands about gowns and flirtations? Men-ghosts who plotted strategy and wished for their usual brandy or drinks?
All of this and more traveled through his mind as he explored unimpeded by royal, guard or other guest.
