The northernmost clan of Vulcanis, Clan Penrose is also arguably the smallest. Located in the heart of the mountains, they have called Ardlean home for centuries, nestled into the heart of a protected valley through which a strong, mountain fed river runs.
The heart of the mountains that surround the clan lands have yielded minerals in aplenty, while the slopes provide Clan Penrose with the land on which they grow two of the most exotic and profitable crops in Archades - cacao and coffee. These two crops have secured the clan’s finances, especially in the past several decades, allowing them to branch out and explore other means of trade. Penrose is well established for its soft woods trade in cedar and pine, nuts, and textiles thanks to the flocks of mountain sheep and cattle. Recently, clan miners have discovered caches of gemstones in addition to the minerals they harvest. The Penroses are excellent hunters as well, tanning the hides of not only cattle, but deer and other mountain animals.
Originally an off-shoot of Clan Cadag, Clan Penrose won its independence and its homestead in the first conflicts between the Island clans and the Mainland clans, coming to the defense of Clan Cadag when besieged. Penrose’s arrival helped to break the siege, pinning the opposing forces against Cadag walls to compel their surrender and restored peace to Vulcanis, albeit for a short time.
To thank the Penroses for their aid and loyalty, a tie that still exists to this day, the High Laird deeded the head of the Penrose family the newly formed city of Ardlean and the surrounding lands, granting him blessing to establish Penrose as its own clan. From that day, they raised the blue and gold banner that reflects the rose of their name, and the pick-hammer of their trade.
To this day, Clan Penrose maintains strong ties with both Clan Cadag, and its southern neighbors, Clan Connell. While they are a primarily peaceful clan, preferring to stay neutral whenever possible, the Penroses will take a strong stand when necessary. In more recent times, Clan Penrose has openly opposed the Cruachs’ declaration that they should stand as High Lairds of Vulcanis, and decried their often savage methods. There are few to no blood ties between the Penroses and the Cruachs as a consequence.
The Penroses are, unlike many in Vulcanis, dark of hair and eye, a strongly built people where the men grow tall, and the women range from average to tall.
