Summoned by Lady Clara, Annemarie picked up her kit and came at a brisk walk, the better to avoid drawing unwanted attention. Fortunately, due to the hour, the halls were mostly empty. She had a feeling, based on what little Clara told her, that discretion was key here.
Arriving in the royal wing, she had right of admittance day or night in her capacity as apothecary to the Princesses; their needs did not take the clock into account. A nod thanked the guard who admitted the women back into the wing; Clara shadowed her steps after the summons was given, then stepped neatly around Annemarie to guide her to the bathing chamber where the Princesses waited.
The room was cool but the tension was thick as she entered, taking stock of the scene quickly. The Princess Martine was in the tub itself, draped over the side while the Crown Princess was standing behind her, wielding a blood-stained cloth that she was about to dip into water again. Frowning, Annemarie crossed to the tub directly, the better to inspect the wounds. What she saw horrified her, though her expression remained calm. Whomever inflicted these marks was no more than a savage, one who obviously intended to deliver the maximum amount of pain possible.
Exchanging a look briefly with the Crown Princess, she took her place, setting the kit on the table placed nearby and opening it. A glance at Clara preceded her quiet request for a glass of water as she pulled several vials free, and a large, fabric wrapped bottle. Once she had the glass, drops from the vial were added, then swirled to turn the water a definite green color before she handed it to Martine. "Please drink it all, Highness. It will help with your pain and allow me to tend you."
The acts of cleansing the wounds, applying the salve and then a damp piece of linen were bound to be excruciating for the poor princess, who was already in pain enough. Talk could wait until Martine was tended and hopefully asleep, the step she intended to follow this.
