House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable ]: Cameron

Appearance:
Niall is a stout man, a little heftier in the middle than he was as a younger man. However, he is tall, standing over 6 feet, and carries his weight well. Yet most of his stocky build is muscle, a natural phenomenon in the Cameron clan, as is his red hair, which his quite curly, and and full beard. His skin has been tanned from many years in the sun, though his hair has barely begun graying. His eyes are a deep green that often sparkle with mischief and merriment, but they can also take on the hard glint of a man not to be angered. The Camerons are rarely concerned with appearance as far as attire goes, so though his clothing is of a finer quality, he typically doesn't mind if it gets a little dirty. He has a penchant for fine leather and often wears worn in boots, belt with scabbard, and often has gloves or gauntlets on him or with him.
Personality: The Baron is a jovial man. He is typically happy and in a good mood, and enjoys having a good time. Of course, that doesn't mean he isn't a good baron and doesn't do his duty well, because he does. In fact, he takes his duty quite seriously. It's just that he doesn't think any matter in life should really be taken too seriously. It's the Cameron way. Niall enjoys working with his hands and can often be found in the fields, helping with the herds, or even doing carpentry or just about anything else that needs to be done.
But his life isn't just about the work he does or about the position he holds. His family means the world to him, and he adores his children. He spends as much time as he can with them, encouraging them to become strong people, and humble ones. Niall strives to instill in them the characteristics a Cameron typically holds dear, including loyalty, trustworthiness, hard work, and pride in what they do, as well as how to relax and enjoy themselves. He leads by example, and rarely trusts those who don't.
The Baron of Marlowe sometimes does overdo it just a bit, however. It is not uncommon, when they have guests, for him to throw a large celebration, complete with wine and the fine ales and meats they are known for. Sometimes he partakes a little too much. If it weren't for his wife, whom he loves, he would likely fall apart. She keeps him in line and he doesn't often argue with her. At times, his daughters have played a similar role.
Specific Skills or Abilities:
Skilled in matters of war and fighting, including sword and dagger, and a crack shot throwing daggers.
An amazing ability to hold his liquor.
Able to break the tension in most situations.
Good with animals/skilled in animal husbandry.
Some skill as a butcher and tanner, though tanning is mostly a hobby.
Skilled in the use of land/land management, which comes in handy with the limited open areas in the mountains for growing crops.
Knowledgeable with crops.
Skilled rider, particularly good with combat on horseback, and has gained a few tricks over the years.
Character History:
Born in the midst of a cold and white winter, Niall Cameron came into the world screaming his protests at the top of his lungs. He's never been a man not to be heard, nor for his words to be taken lightly. The future baron was raised not in a life of luxury, but of hard work and sound morals. From the time he could walk, his hands were in the dirt and he was working beside his people, learning both his job and theirs. He took to it well and learned everything he could.
It wasn't long before Niall was making improvements to their breeding programs and crop configurations. With so little tillable land in the mountains, every bit had to be used wisely in order to feed the whole clan. He also started working to improve their cattle and sheep stock, and he worked to breed a more sturdy mountain pony. More recently, he has begun cross breeding the mountain horses in hopes of better stamina and agility. However, hunting also became one of his favorite pastimes when he had a spare morning, and he got rather good at it. Often he would go out with his younger brother, Diarmad, whom he has always been close to.
Knowing he would be baron one day and would need to secure his bloodline, he took a wife at a fairly young age when he was only 20. About two years later, his first child was born, a son they named Tamhas. Another son followed a couple of years later, and his family quickly grew. He is fairly close to most of his children, though each in a different way. Tamhas is very similar to him and will one day be heir, so much of their time as the young man was growing up was spent together. Callum is a little more easy going and enjoys the dogs, something they have in common. Isobel, his eldest daughter, often looks after him along with his youngest, Kenna, who is always testing her limits. Of all of them, it is Adair he is most distant with, and he sometimes has a hard time connecting with his youngest son.
It was shortly after Isobel's birth that Niall's father, Kentigern, was killed during a night raid. A small horde of bandits were attempting to steal their sheep and cattle. The baron defended what was theirs, but in the process, a knife founds it's way into his back. The wound was fatal. Niall, who was fighting at his father's side, was enraged and saddened, and he ended the thief's life with a blade of his own. His skill with knife throwing was a point of pride, and it served the justice his father deserved.
The title passed to Niall, and much of his focus has been on leading his people by example and doing his best by them ever since. Now, at a similar age to that at which his father died, his wife and daughters are taking particular care to see that he remains in good health. He loves them dearly and understands their caring, but at times it does get to be a little much. Still, he knows that he won't be around forever, and he has redoubled his efforts in finding Tamhas a suitable wife, as well as searching for a suitor for Isobel.
Writing Sample:
“Just so,” he nodded with approval. “It is important for a knight to use all of the tools he has at his disposal. The shield is as much used for defense as it is for offense. It can be used to strike people, batter people and so on. There will be those that claim it is not particularly honorable to do so, but …” Tristan let out a slow breath. “You will come across an opponent who does not share your sense of honor.” That and the matter of honor became complicated in combat. Tristan knew.
The excitement the young man displayed seemed to quietly amuse Tristan. “Yes. Daggers are quite useful in many circumstances. It is prudent that a knight be trained in the use of many weapons, but there can be risk of learning too many styles. It is best to focus on a few and master them, rather than be a jack of all trades, so to speak.” Tristan hoped that he was making sense. This was his first squire and he realized this was both easier and more challenging than he had anticipated.
