The road from Bordelaix to Lavigne and back again had been long. True, taking the barge down the river significantly sped up his journey, but his task took longer than anticipated. The man indebted to the bank had proven craftier than Gabriel had anticipated. One could say that he put his loan to good use, but in the end, he failed to escape to Montenoire in time. Over the course of several days, Gabriel not managed to recover fifty percent of the assets, but also extracted a means of future repayment on the loan. The indebted men left Lavigne a little… less than what he was, but alas; that was the price of conducting business.
No barges were available to take up back up river and as such, he was forced to return to Bordelaix by horse. Though he was hardly the most social of creatures in the world, he was looking forward to getting back into his more native environment. A city with Courtly Hordes was always more fascinating than some backwater port town. No messages had been sent to him during his absence and as such, he assumed everything was going according to the plan.
However, upon his return to Bordelaix, he discovered to his great displeasure that this was not the case. While he had been on the road, a message had been sent to his Nymph, who was the informant within the Chateau, but he did not get an answer. Upon his return, he was relieved to find out that she was still well, but not so pleased to learn she had left for Vasile. That was not was she was supposed to do. What was his little Nymph up to? Alas, there was nothing he could do about it.
Thus, with some disgust, he returned to the Blackthorne home within the Lavender Quarter. The sun had long since set and the night crowds were still flittering this way and that. Gabriel ignored them all in favor of his preferred shelter. Upon his arrival, he dismounted, passed off the horse to a groom and ventured into house. No doubt Remy would still be awake within his study, which was Gabriel’s intended destination.
However, he found himself distracted by another family member in one of the sitting rooms. Silent as a wraith and just as leery, Gabriel stood in the door way and openly studied his sister, Adele. Even the shadows of the hallway seemed to still drape over him like a cloak, with only his eyes partially visible to her.
