Reality would return all too soon for her liking, and Elizabeth was in no hurry for that to occur. The longer that this enchanted moment could last, the better. She was enjoying being like any other young woman, talking and flirting a little as if she was perfectly normal. Once her name was revealed, all of that could and likely would change. For the time being, she intended to cling to her pseudonym and the opportunity he presented.
"I promise you," Lizzie did not think, instinctively resting her hand on his arm in reassurance, "I am perfectly happy to continue sitting with you and talking. Why spoil such a perfect time by displaying my inferior dance skills?" The deprecating words were spoken with a blithe laugh, hoping he had no cause ever to learn just how truly inferior those non-existent skills were. "This is where I want to be, and am content to be so long as you are willing to share my company, my lord." Hopefully, she was not boring him - that was her dread, that he found her dull and wanted to head off.
Uncertain how to take his remark on talents, she instead focused on his admission about books. Delighted to know she was blessed with the companionship of another who shared the love of the written word, she quipped, "You sound like my elder brother. Does this mean you are the head of your family? And on those precious occasions when you are able to read for your own pleasure, what kind of books do you enjoy?" Everyone had their preferences, and learning the genres they enjoyed often gave insight into a person.
His questions made her smile, glad to explain. "There are many different types of lace, made with different materials and patterns. I enjoy making several different kinds, and yes, I do sell them. It helps me to feel independent," Lizzie's smile turned wry, realizing she might have to explain that remark.
The new question was welcome, her eyes glinting with mischief as she considered. "Oh, probably leagues. I'm not adept with distances, though. What of you?"
