Character Name:
Reed Gardiner
Age:
32
Gender:
Male
Birthdate:
March 14, 1395
City / Region:
Lockewood, Shelbourne
House: Gardiner by birth
Played by: Tom Burke
Appearance:
Reed is a tall, lean man who dresses simply. Plain shirts and tunics, breeches, boots are his usual outfit. When he is forced to dress up, he'll wear dark colors. He prefers to keep his hair longer and, if he can get away with it, prefers to leave it to its own devices. However, he does maintain his beard much better and goes to lengths to ensure it is neatly trimmed at all times. While he is decidedly not adverse to getting his hands dirty and do some proper work, he knows there are times when he must present a suitably ducal appearance and when those times come, he does clean up quite well.
(Remainder is original work by Dara)
Personality:
As the Duke of Shelbourne, Reed is supposed to be a serious and some-times stern man. The reality is, he's typically good humored, annoyingly cheerful and some would call him incorrigible. In his view, life is meant to be lived and enjoyed, the serious as well as the humorous. He does take his lands seriously, having a deep seeded love for the fields and hot-houses that are his legacy. Land is something that he wants more of and thinks of himself as a steward to, because without land, there are no crops. No food equals no life.
He takes his responsibilities seriously, putting them as first priority, and that includes his family. Reed is extremely protective, but he is also pragmatic. A farmer has to be, hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. Most of his time is spent at Lockewood, especially during the growing season, but he is swift to answer the call of the King. Duty is paramount in his mind, and without the royal patronage that the Gardiners enjoy, their lives would not be possible.
In spite of all the solemn aspects of his life, Reed is often smiling. Little things bring him joy. A beautiful flower. The sight of his siblings laughing. The sun shining down on freshly-plowed earth in Spring. The first wobbling steps of a new-born colt. He enjoys spreading that joy around, particularly through his love of good food. When you grow some of the finest fruits and vegetables in the land, you develop a fine palate!
Reed is a hospitable soul, one who enjoys other people. Winter-time lets him show off his home to guests and appreciate the hard work of the summer in the fine table he sets and the entertainers he hires. He is a man who prefers to be busy, always planning for the next planting season or trying some new agricultural experiment. He is not a complacent man by any means.
Background:
As the eldest of the newest generation of Gardiners, Reed was raised on the lands. By the Lord's decree, children did not go to Bordelaix until they were at least fifteen years of age, and Reed was no exception. Given the education the heir of a Lord, he was also a child of the land, taught to love, respect and learn its every mood from an early age. As he grew old enough, he learned the rudiments of farming, working beside the people to see the benefits of hard work. The land thrived more for tender, loving care.
Growing into a youth, Reed's days were full from dawn to dusk. Mornings were for his tutors and the armsmaster, because a Lord had to know how to defend his lands. Afternoons were spent with Linden, the steward and the lands as they oversaw the villages, the fields and the like. Matters of fertilization, crop rotation, pest control and the like were of great importance, as was maintaining the hot-houses that kept the growing season going all year long. He developed an interest in exotic flowers as well, setting aside time to grow and craft new blossoms.
Linden, seeing his son's capability, began to instruct him in the aspect of politics that had to be played in Archades. Bringing him to Bordelaix, he was introduced to court and enjoyed a few months there, gaining a foot-hold for his House before his father's illness forced his return to Shelbourne. He prefers life at Lockewood, but knowing his siblings are mature, it is time for them to start branching out and making more friends and allies. Reed also knows he has a future to procure, and an heir to produce.
