Sophie was not completely certain of the hour when she'd successfully slipped out of the Sinclair home without detection, hurrying across the quarter to where the Tesoro family resided. It was imperative that she be found in her proper bed, in her proper chamber when the housemaid arrived to wake her; if the girl were to come rapping and opened the door to find the room devoid of Sophie, there would be an uproar of cataclysmic proportions. Explanations would be demanded and lectures would ensue thereafter; neither of those appealed to her. It was none of anyone's business why she'd sneaked out of the house and returned in the darkest hour just before dawn.
Well, except for Giulia, of course. Sophie kept few to no secrets from her twin.
Moving with what she believed to be commendable stealth, Sophie padded through the halls in stocking feet. Carrying her shoes, she gingerly traversed the stairs up to the family's sleeping chambers, taking care to skip over those treads known to creak. Reaching the floor with a measure of success, she barely stifled a startled yelp when one of the cats suddenly appeared, winding sinuously around her legs with a meow of greeting. Sophie shook her head at herself, bending to scoop the cat up and carry her along to the bedroom that was hers. The company would be welcome for the rest of the night, seeing as she'd pleaded a headache and retired alone, rather than with her twin as usual.
Continuing down the hall, she smiled faintly as the cat nuzzled at her face, letting out a soft purr. Sophie had a great deal of affection for the felines of the house; they, like so few others, appeared to understand and accept her just as she was, content to lurk in her general area or come demanding attention. The one nestled into her arms was her especial favorite, a sleek orange tabby with bright green eyes. No easy task to juggle cat and shoes while attempting to open the door silently, but Sophie managed it with some finesse, stepping inside to deposit cat on his feet while she eased the door closed and let out a breath.
She'd done it, returned home with no one the wiser that she'd left.
