Mariette was a naturally sunny soul who looked on most people as friends and those to be enjoyed. As one of the younger princesses, the pressure was not so great on her to be the formal, aloof and restrained woman that Nicolette was, or the haughty, beautiful trendsetter that was her sister Antoinette. Tristan merely accepted her as she was, without unnecessary critique or condemnation for her awkwardness. For her, he was a relief and a refreshing respite.
She felt his eyes on her and occasionally stole an almost shy glance back at him. His sheer good looks did not fail to impress themselves on her, nor did her preferred reading material suggest that he couldn’t be cast in the role of romantic, dashing knight in shining armor. He was courteous, handsome, chivalrous, attentive, kind… and she feared she was half in love with him already. It was not a good thing; Nicolette, Antoinette and Uncle would definitely not approve. The informality she offered would set all of their hackles up too, but she couldn’t help herself. It felt natural and right, her smile blooming as he used her name. “I think we should, and your horse as well.”
Blue eyes twinkled at him, meeting his gaze before she laughed. “I’m sure they’re wonderful, and if we can find some apples to reward our faithful steeds, then the day will be off to a good start.” Marie wasn’t worried about royal fare; she’d had enough of elaborate dishes and heavily sauced items that a simple meat pie, a mug of cider and a piece of fruit sounded like heaven on earth to her. Nudging her mare forward, she was not going to wait any more for the day’s adventure. It was time to be off!
