Character History:
Being the second born son, he was considered the spare to the heir and was raised as such. He was given proper education at least until he came of age to be a squire. His father had no qualms about training the second born to fight and protect rather than rule, and should the worst occur be educated and seasoned enough to take the role of heir. He wasn't so much taught the ways of the land as much as it was to fight fight and defend what was his. Under the tutelage of Sir Originus he learned the aspects of, creed and meaning of chivalry.
How to carry one's self in and out of battle, the value of duty, respect and honor from an early age and as he matured so did these ideals and morals. While his brother learned the means of farming he learned the means of being humbled before any who knew more than him in any skill and aspect of life. While he didn't work beside the commoners he learned their interests, their struggles and why it was his duty to be their sentinel. The balance of duty, while it was they who toiled, provided and fed it was his duty to respect and protect them.
As the eldest of the newest generation of Gardiners, Reed was raised on the lands. By the Lord's decree, children did not go to Bordelaix until they were at least fifteen years of age, and Reed was no exception. Given the education the heir of a Lord, he was also a child of the land, taught to love, respect and learn its every mood from an early age. As he grew old enough, he learned the rudiments of farming, working beside the people to see the benefits of hard work. The land thrived more for tender, loving care.It was in these years of learning did Rowan learn of his love of horses, they pulled loads, transported men and crops, and it didn't take long for them too to earn his adoration and love.
In the times he did come home in the short moments of peace he and his brothers got along, and while he respected and loved Reed he got with Mace along far better given how much he and Mace had in common. There was always a certain loving rivalry between them and despite the age difference Mace tended to be stronger, larger while Rowan plateaued though as the years went by it became obvious that his little brother wasn't quite so little. But it encouraged Rowan to rely on speed, dexterity and reflexes.
With Reed though their time far more intellectual, he could recognize that Reed was intelligent, mindful of the big picture than the next hunt, the next battle or the next time he could spend in the stables. Reed knew to farm, to cultivate, he knew the toil of the fields first hand and with it, the reward of the harvest. But despite their differences they still held the commonality of their House, the good of Shelbourne, the love of family, and the bond only brother's could share. That and Rowan's persistence that Reed hurry, find a wife and bear an heir and some spares.
Horses didn't complain, and rarely did they rebel, always willing to serve and always pleased to see their masters. In place of politics Rowan was taught courtesy and service, in place of rule he was taught how to secure for years he accompanied his Knight tutor into skirmishes and hunts at least until the time came for him to earn his knighthood. It was earned in the war against the Gerstner tribe where he broke the ranks of tribesmen, cutting down at least twelve with his own blade. Through combat, hunting and war he learned to live outside the security of a castle, away from the want of servants, to become self sufficient if need be.
When he was knighted he knew then his brother would be Duke, he was healthy, strong and seemingly determined having already worked to strengthen the ties of the House to allies. Despite the request to join the Order of the Verdant Shield given his skill on horseback, his mastery with a sword, as a hunter and fighter he refused, swearing fealty to his House and his House alone. He recognized he wouldn't be Duke, he didn't seek it and when his father passed he swore himself to Reed's service an oath easy for him to commit to. He didn't need an order, when he had a House.
With his sisters he was cordial but until the recent decade he never found time to truly spend quality time with them. But the past decade was filled with story telling, talks of horses, and wild flora that was edible but otherwise far too busy with his duties to focus on blooming deep and meaningful relationships with them. As for his cousins there was rarely time to seek them out even in his years as a man unless he come across them by chance. But like he was with others, he could easily recognize them and was often cordial enough to ask about their day and events in their lives.
But he also seeks to sow oats of his own, and branch out a family of his own and while he has no titles to pass to any sons he has his honor and knowledge of to provide them. And a prominent name to add to their own, acting as his brother's justice he makes it sport to hunt down criminals and keep Shelbourne safe as he did for his father.
Writing Sample:
A breath escape his lips, captured visually as cold fog before his face, while the air was chilled in the high mountain most southeastern of the region here was where he learned brigands had hidden away. He brought with him a few household guards and while he was sure he wouldn't require them, they would lend advantage to his righteous cause. The hooves of his mount clomped against stone and mud, while the guardsmen followed behind on foot. As he turned the rock face and into the mountain clearing there saw a fire having smoldered into smoking ash and charred wood, surrounded by two tents with men asleep inside covered by furs.
Oak chests sat forced open as the locks splayed to prying and forced entry, inside fine fabrics and spices recently robbed from a caravan. And while the owners laid dead in the dirt roads where they were reaved and left to bleed out. "Ho!" Rowan called out loudly to spry them from slumber as two of them stood suddenly, blood shot eyes peering to the knight in armor the symbol on his chest so ostentatiously displaying the symbol of House Gardiner. "Lads, you're to come with me and face the ducal seat in the name of justice.. or resist and only bother His Grace with a letter of occurrence either is fine for me but I prefer not to sully my clean and oiled blade with brigand flesh if you'll be so kind."
Words were nor reciprocated but rather the swift grabbing of axes, and makeshift maces as Rowan's lips curl ever so slightly at the right corner into a smirk. "The choice as been made and the cast died apparently, Lunaris tests your souls this morning as he does mine, attack." He stated ordered the guardsmen forward as the brigands charged forward with a combination of bravery and stupidity.
