The morning after she’d arrived, Elspeth wished to send a page with a short letter to her cousin Isobel, letting her know that she’d finally arrived and that she’d love to see her at her convenience. Though she had business of her own to attend to, she was only just starting and she had (for the time being) no one to answer to, so it was much easier for her to adapt to Isobel’s schedule than the other way around. It did not do to be demanding when there was nothing to be gained from it. And, besides, even she knew that the polite thing to do in their situation was to be respectful of her cousin’s new position and the obligations that came from it. But, before she could do that, Uncle Niall had told her that Isobel had been away with Princess Marie-Louise - and luckily so, for it had saved her some embarrassment.
As she waited for news of Isobel’s return, Elspeth wondered her cousin had as many surprising novelties to report as Ian did. It was amusing, and mildly mystifying, to have her brother admit to have fallen into a romantic calamity (though that was far too dramatic of a description of the situation, but she could not help herself; it was simply too amusing). Would Isobel make similar confessions? Or did she favour politics and intrigue over romance? All the possibilities made Elspeth curious.
But not curious enough to postpone immersing herself in her own business as soon as she got the chance.
Despite her vocal protest, she had been dragged off to the feast at the Palace to attend the final evening of the Harvest Festival, but other than that, she had only left the house to visit her warehouse, the stall they’d used for years to sell their wares in the Capital, as well as the new stall, still in preparation. Between this new work and running her side of the business in Marlowe from afar, she was pleasantly busy, and though the newness of her situation still made her feel a little inadequate, she relied on the familiar to maintain a level head and soldier through.
She had returned from the warehouse one evening when news of Isobel's arrival finally came - as did her cousin, coming straight to her family home, no less! Elspeth grinned happily at the news, and only the wish to let her cousin and her father have their reunion in peace kept her from finding her right away. For all that she was eager to see Isobel, she did not wish to intrude on such a private and, undoubtedly, long-awaited moment. She did, however, give instructions to have Isobel told of her presence and her desire to see her whenever her cousin wished.
Elspeth rose early the morning after, as usual, pouring over reports and other various documentation, working through breakfast despite her maid's insistence that she should take at least ten minutes to eat something. She waved the woman off as she would a pesky fly; there were things to be done, dammit, and the sooner the better. Besides, while she was certain Isobel would come to her soon, she had no idea exactly when, and she did not want her mind distracted by business when they finally met again... and, knowing herself, that was exactly what would've happened.
So, no. The more she got done now, the more fully could she devote herself to Isobel when her cousin appears.
