Character Name: Reece Sinclair
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Birthdate: 18 October 1411
City / Region: Ashworth (birth) Lockewood (current)/ Shelbourne
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable ]: Sinclair (birth) Gardiner (ward and squire to Lord Rowan)
Played by: Meganne Young
Appearance:
To be practical, Reece keeps her brown hair short. Not short like a boy as she will go no shorter than her shoulders. She has enough hair to pin up to appear more feminine if she were requested to wear a gown, but most cases her attire consist of what may look like riding gear or tunic and breeches. It all depends on what work she is doing that day and what she has been requested to wear.
Inside, her hair can appear darker, but it has become lighter the more she is out in the sun. Her eyes are similar, but the moment the light catches her eyes it is quite clear they are hazel with a very light twinkle of green, that can be easily missed. It might seem she is out of place with other Sinclairs, but within the Gardiner family she certainly seems she belongs. She is quite flat chested, which helps with her ability to train. Of average height, not too short or too tall, but compared to many men in her family and others she trains with she can’t compare to them at all.
Personality:
Like many of her family, Reece is very loyal to her family and those she serves. She enjoys the outdoors over being cooped up inside and doesn’t even mind having to do the hard work and training to experience it. Despite her desires to be a Knight, not being a contemporary occupation for a woman, Reece is still well mannered and respectful to her superiors. She is a hard worker and wishes to do right by her family, and of course to Lord Rowan.
Being exposed to a rougher lifestyle a woman may not be used to has had little affects on her personality. She is not outspoken, does not talk back, and nor does she cuss, at least not outspokenly. She does however, enjoy learning new ballads to sing that she may not have known before. She can only hope that all her hard work pays off and she will be Knighted one day. She admires her brothers, especially those that are Knighted and her one sister being unwed gives her further hope that she will reach her goal, lest a husband is found for her and she can only do what her family and Lord wish of her. For now, she is quite happy where she is.
Specific Skills or Abilities:
- Horse riding/caring for horses: horse riding means one thing. Freedom. At least it feels like it in the moment she gets to ride. And as a squire she must learn that your steed comes first, a unhealthy horse isn’t going to save anyone in battle.
- Singing: Reece has a sweet voice, nothing like an angel of course, but sings to the horses she cares for or as she works if the situation permits.
- Gardening/Herbal medicine: being a squire and one in link to the Gardiner family, Reece has learned how to care for and identify plants and herbs to use them for food or to heal a wound.
- Fighting: Though she is not the best with the sword and is still learning she trains hard and actually prefers the bow. She can fire an arrow from horseback exceptionally well.
- Dancing: Reece sees dancing as a way to practice her footwork. But perhaps isn’t the best at it compared to other women in the family and of course if she’s not used to wearing gowns.
- Literate: To serve her Lord and to have a chance to write home, learning to read and write was a must and had to be allowed. As not all women need the skill.
- Cooking: Just like medicine, she needs to know how to prepare food on the road. As a very young child she especially loved baking, and perhaps was a bit chubby eating sweets. While she still has a bit of a sweet tooth it’s very rare she touches them now.
Character History:
Being born the youngest and a girl in a family with many brothers and only one sister, it was clear that Reece would be doted upon and raised to be a respectful young lady. At a young age, she learned all there was to be such a lady, her most favourite things were visiting the horses, singing and dancing. Even from a young age she came to love the outdoors.
Though she was being groomed to perhaps marry one day, little Reece had other plans. She become fascinated watching her brothers train, especially those who worked their way up from squire to Knight. And in her eyes, that’s now what she wanted. At first she began to learn herself, by observing, watching how her brothers move. And then it was allowed at least for her to learn archery. She couldn’t cause too much trouble with that right? Wrong. Her passion grew so intensely that she practiced every day and when she was then able to combine such passion with riding horses she exceeded expectations and it shouldn’t come as a surprise to her family that she too voiced her wish to be a squire.
With the Order of the Verdant Shield situated in her home region, one would think she would be placed with someone from there, but it was not so. Lord Rowan Gardiner had been visiting and come across her in the training yards. From behind it was easy to mistake her for a boy, so he tested her. Learning from watching her brothers, she had enough time to react and was surprisingly good with her reflexes. Upon learning who she was and having underestimated her for that split second, an idea would soon form before them that would change her life completely. For a young lady she had fighting spirit, dedication and determination. And their shared love for horses perhaps intrigued him enough to consider her. Of course, Reece has no real idea what made him decide to have her as his squire or the arrangements around it, but she was excited to have someone so important take interest in her.
If it didn’t work out though, it was likely she would never get another chance again. So she proved her determination and left with the Lord that day. She was sad to leave her family and home, but she was eager to learn under the Lord. The very mere instant she pledged herself to him, life became hard. He was not easy on her for being a girl, and had to adjust quickly or fail. She almost wanted to quit at least three times, but was determined to not let Rowan or her family down. She did not want to be a disgrace to him or her family.
Thankfully, there were times she was able to have a break. Holidays and Sundays she was allowed to visit Ashworth to see her family or see them when passing through. Otherwise, she would find time to write to them. One such time she had wanted to quit was when she heard of the news of her cousin, Elizabeth’s accident. She admired all those in her family as being older than her they showed her the way in life and she wanted nothing more to be by her side. Reece rarely cried, but she certainly cried for her that day. She may had lost a bit of her own spirit during this time, especially seeing how changed Gideon was, but the news that a special saddle was made for her cousin uplifted her and was extremely excited for her next visit to see it in action herself. This would be the second time she cried, but for joy. Now if Elizabeth could defeat the odds and find something to help her enjoy life again, Reece herself regained her full determination, stronger than before with renewed purpose.
Now, Reece continues to serve under Lord Rowan, going where he goes unless requested otherwise. And all Reece can think about is to become a Knight just as the men in her family have and honour her family and the world around her.
Writing Sample:
It was her birthday today. It made Reece feel unnerving but also excited. One more year closer to possibly becoming a Knight, but also if everything doesn’t go to plan, it also meant she was one more year older to be offered for a marriage. Other than that, her day wasn’t going to be much different. She was up before the crack of dawn, dressed and readied herself for the day, eating a quick bite to eat. She assisted Lord Rowan with anything he needed upon waking, but was soon out the door to start her early chores before training session.
One may find chores as a bore, but not Reece. Dressed in boots, a tunic and breeches, her hair braided to keep out of her face, she pulled on a short cloak for warmth and stepped out into the cold. She trudged on out to the stables, first having to check on the horses and feed them. As she opened the door to the stables, a loud whiny could be heard. And she huffed. ”Yes, I know, I’m coming. Hold your horses!” A pause and quick chuff of laughter realising what she had said, before reaching the first horse in the long line of horses standing in their stalls. She held out a piece of apple to the black gelding and he gobbled it up. ”Morning beautiful.” She said sweetly to him, before petting him on the nose then walking off to go mix their food.
It was a somewhat slow process as she greeted all the horses by name and sneak them a treat. As she mixed and organised the grain and hay, she casually began to sing.
"Come by the hills to a land where fancy is free
And stand where the peaks meet the sky and the lochs reach the sea
Where the rivers run clear and the bracken is gold in the sun
And the cares of tomorrow must wait 'til this day is done.
Come by the hills to the land where life is a song
And sing while the birds fill the air with their joy all day long
Where the trees sway in time and even the wind sings in tune
And the cares of tomorrow can wait 'til this day is done.”
