It was the longest night. The escape from the castle proper had proven tiring, but moving furtively through the streets of Bordelaix proved even more so, especially given their attire. The confusion rippling through the city served to aid them. Everyone was so focused on finding out what happened at the castle that they paid little attention anything else. Tristan stuck close to dark alleyways and less traveled streets to reach their first destination. Luck was further on their side for he found an abandoned and tattered cloak for Juliette to put on. Its smell was less than pleasant, but the gave the desired effect. Tristan himself abandoned his official doublet.
Sir William had to come to Bordelaix for the festival and was staying at one of the less prominent inns in the Orchid quarter. That it happened to be near the infamous Lilac Quarter was of some concern to Tristan, but that could not be helped. Upon entering the inn, Tristan found his former mentor savoring an ale by the fireplace in the common room. That the man stuck to his habits was a blessing, indeed. It only took one look and a few words from Tristan to spring the older knight into discreet action.
The next several hours were frenetic to say the least. It did not take them long to realize that forces were in action to lock down the city and they were not necessarily those of the Crown. They did not have time to investigate and instead used the chaos to make good their escape from the city before the gates slammed shut. They had only Sir William’s horse. The knight promptly gave it to Tristan and saw them off with promises that they would meet again.
Several hours of riding later, they arrived at the nearby lake estate of the Deverauxs. Tristan hid Juliette and the horse in a thicket off the road before scouting ahead to determine the site’s safety and security. It was no doubt a tense hour for Juliette, but proved worthwhile; he proved the place safe to their ends and the small number of servants ready to assist.
When they entered the manor, Tristan told the servants to see to Juliette’s needs while he set out determining the security of the manor and preparing to stand watch. The younger servants would be drafted as additional house guards. It was a few hours later that the knight finally had time to check in on Juliette, no doubt given one of the rooms. Was she awake or had exhaustion finally claimed her?
