Character Name: Anton Deveraux
Age: 21
Gender: Male
Birthdate: November 5, 1406
City / Region: Bordelaix, Faucheux
House: Deveraux
Played by: Cary Elwes
Appearance: With a head full of wavy yellow hair, a strong jaw, and a dimpled chin, Anton has a most handsome bearing. As fits his noble stature, his face is clear of blemish. He is a tall young man with a strong back and broad chest, and has a short crooked nose and a full, pouting mouth. There is an effortless beauty to him.
Personality: Anton has little time for intellectual pursuits. The only challenges that intrigue him are those that take place at sea. He has always been diligent in his work. Though he is not a man of great ambition, he enjoys telling people under him what to do, and believes himself to be very sharp because most of them have to listen to him. He hasn't been at sea for some time, however, and he misses it terribly. While waiting to return to the Navy, he has been entertaining himself with drinking, gambling, and the company of congenial ladies.
Under normal circumstances, he isn't close with any of his siblings, but the recent coup has shaken his priorities somewhat. Concern for his young sister in particular has come to the front of his mind.
With no head for politics, or really anything but sailing, a person who knows the right way to speak with him might find that Anton is rather easily manipulated. He has a temper when he doesn't get what he wants, which has been happening more and more lately, and tends to sulk.
Anton enjoys women, but thinks rather little of them. To him, they are a brief amusement. Marriage, while surely an inevitability, is something that is of little concern to him. When the time comes, there will be a suitable bride for him. The company of men is more valuable to Anton. He views them as the superior sex, and derives great pleasure from male friendship of the kind that he became used to while he was at sea.
Specific Skills or Abilities: Anton is conscious of the rules of etiquette for a man of his station, and knows his way both around the court and in a military setting. He is just as much at home in a dirty inn or brothel. This social know-how is mainly superficial, however-- he knows people, and knows the appropriate way to behave, but that is about it.
His knowledge when it comes to sailing and the sea is extensive. He knows a couple of things about warfare as well. What little he has retained of his history lessons mainly revolves around old naval battles. He is also a talented swordsman.
Character History: Anton enjoyed a privileged childhood. As a boy he played and fought with his siblings and cousins, only dimly aware of the great wealth and power that their family held. Their beautiful home, their legions of servants, and their sumptuous lifestyle was only a fact of life to him.
From a young age, it was clear that, like his older brother, Anton would follow in their father's footsteps as a military man. He was raised accordingly. Though he lacked the great aptitude that shone from Pierre, he did acceptably well in his lessons. When he came of age to join the Navy he bade his family farewell and left for the sea.
It was as part of the admiralty's fleet that Anton discovered his passion. He had never set foot on a boat before that first day on the ocean, but he took to it with more joy than even he ever expected. Even then, hardly more than a boy, he knew that he would spend the rest of his life riding the waves and breathing that salty air. He was at sea when his mother died.
Only when his cousin Nicolette was named crown regent did Anton return on a more permanent basis to his family home. What he thought would be perhaps a week ashore turned quickly to a month, which turned into a year. He was still waiting for his chance to return to the sailing life when she was crowned.
Today, Anton sits shaken by the brutality that took the crown from the Deveraux family. He begins to wonder not only if he will ever return to the sea, but about the fate of his family altogether.
Writing Sample:
"Of course, my dear." Anton takes his sister's hand and helps her down off the step.
The sky appears cast in shadow. All the colour has been drained from the world. Even the grass underfoot is more gray than green. There is a glow behind the clouds but it only serves to illuminate the hillside. Days like this are cold. They feel wet before the rain even begins. A chill seeps through Anton's short, red nap cloak as he sweeps down the path with Marie-Louise.
He watches the clouds roll on the horizon. "I won't be going anywhere soon. I can assure you of that. No..." He frowns. "I think I'll be here with you a while longer. I do hope to be back to the
