Prior to departing for Shelbourne, Nicolette sent letters, requesting that the remainder of the Deveraux family travel north to meet with her in Lockewood. Circumstances dictated a most private and lengthy discussion of the future for their family. Fortunately, Lord Gardiner graciously accommodated her request for a location where the family could meet privately, indicating a summerhouse on the property that proved sufficient for their needs. There, food and drink was set on a long table where those attending could select what they wished, along with comfortable chairs. Nicolette knew that this was not going to be a swiftly concluded matter and intended to see that there were as few distractions in the form of basic human needs as possible.
Pages were sent to each family member with a note, requesting that member to follow the page to the summerhouse for a long over-due family meeting. They were scheduled to depart Lockewood within the next few days, but she felt herself reluctant to return to Bordelaix without knowing where her family members stood on the intended Deveraux agenda. In the spirit of open communication and to gauge who was willing to help her in the fight to preserve their station, she stood waiting patiently in the open, airy room of the summerhouse, sunlight slanting in like a balm to her wounded soul.
This was likely to prove her first true test as the acting head of the family, leaving Nicolette more than a little anxious and uncertain. Her authority over the varied members of the family was not firmly established, yet her father's reign compelled her to take that step forward sooner, rather than later. A hand rose to smooth her hair, then her skirts, as she glanced towards the castle, curious to see who would be the first to join her on the front lines.
