The news delivered to Septimus during the negotiations left him unsettled, unwilling to believe in the coincidence of the matter. The Montefiores were known to have ties to Rohari and the nomadic desert tribes; could they be so false as to arrange such a mischance? Septimus was not entirely disinclined to think so, yet he reserved judgment for now. Finding a means to adjourn the meeting until the next day, he excused himself abruptly, gesturing for his brothers to join him for a conference on the matter.
Leading the way to another room where they could discuss the details of the alarming announcement in relative privacy, the grim-featured duke waited until each was within the room before instructing the Captain of his guard to take a stance and prevent any from entering who did not bear the name Deliambre; Silvio would be admitted if he desired to enter the room, as would Catalina, yet he doubted his sisters had any real interest in the matter. They had not involved themselves in duchy business heretofore; it was unlikely they would do so suddenly.
Instruction given, Septimus closed the door and faced his brothers with an unsmiling countenance before he seated himself, trusting they would do so as well. "Now then, what details of these missing ships do you have for us, Enzo? And why were we not told of this before now?" He included his brother in the 'we,' not suggesting that his brother concealed anything from him. That was counterproductive to family business, and hardly in keeping with Lorenzo's style as a businessman. These were ships belonging to their cousins, rather than to the main branch of the family, yet the loss impacted Deliambre as a while.
And if the Montefiore were behind it, then by the gods, he wanted to know before he made any kind of settlement with their perfidious kinsmen.
