Character Name:
Elena Maria Sandoval
Age:
22
Gender:
Female
Birthdate:
November 1, 1407
City / Region:
Nacimiento
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable]:
Sandoval
Played by:
Nina Dobrev
Appearance:
A young woman of medium height and slender build, Elena has a wealth of curling black hair that falls to the small of her back and frames an oval face of porcelain skin with dark eyes. She dresses to accentuate her figure, preferring strong colors. Elena is mindful at all times of her appearance and the expectation of a Sandoval daughter, so she is seldom anything less than impeccable. She has a love of earrings, and rarely ventures out without a pair dancing from her lobes.
Personality:
Where her sister is the more openly passionate and fiery soul, Elena exudes an air of serenity. She has not always been that composed or calm, but has discovered in a family that burns with the desire for vengeance, someone has to keep their head firmly on their shoulders. That does not mean she lacks passion, fire or temper, but that the display of those requires severe provocation.
However, when she is thoroughly provoked, Elena is formidable simply because it is so rare for her to give vent to her emotions in such a fashion.
Quieter than her sister by far, she has taken to the duties gradually assigned to her as the future Duchess of Seravino with a will. Elena enjoys being busy and overseeing a home and family, as well as tending to the people who will soon be hers thanks to her betrothal to Niccolo Montefiore. As for the man himself, she is uncertain of her feelings. He is her paradoxical opposite in many ways, resulting in no small amount of confusion on her part.
Regardless, Elena is a woman who puts family first always. There is nothing and no one more important to her, whether they are Sandoval, or now Montefiore. A woman of loyalty, she can be a proud and arrogant seeming figure, yet that is more to conceal her inner sensitivity and the soft core of the woman that despite her family's ambitions wants little more than home, hearth and family.
Organized to a fault, she prefers her days to follow a comfortable routine, one whereby she may plan for future situations, though when circumstances call for it, she can react swiftly and decisively. Welcoming the challenges that are being presented to her as the future Duchess of Seravino, Elena is determined to succeed... and to help the Duke channel his fiery, passionate nature into useful, helpful and admirable aspects.
Background:
Born four years after Catalina, Elena Sandoval was a shadow of her sister in nearly every way. Shorter, far more plain, more shy and withdrawn, and a rather awkward child, she was often a figure of ridicule among her cousins for the wiry hair, the too wide eyes and teeth that seemed far too large for one little girl's mouth. Despite the physical appearance that left her incredibly sensitive to teasing, especially from her very handsome cousin Dante, she did not resent Catalina for her sister's natural beauty and grace.
Instead, Elena decided that since Catalina was the pretty one, she would have to be the smart one. Applying herself to her studies at a very young age, she turned her typical Sandoval passion on the lessons set for them, same as were given to their male cousins. It was there that Elena shone, finally bringing smiles to the little girl's face when she was praised for her quick sums, her grasp of concepts and her excellent penmanship, as well as her attention. In education, little Elena felt on steady ground and thought she could blossom. Devoting herself to her lessons also meant she could avoid the teasing and the pranks, some of which were cruel to the sensitive little girl and left her in tears.
Catalina eventually discovered the truth of that, responding cuttingly to their cousins with a dire warning. She cautioned their cousins to take care, because some day, they would regret teasing Elena so much. She would surprise them all when she grew up, of that Catalina was sure. Leaving them to snicker in doubt, the older went in search of the younger to coax her out of her books. The two made an agreement - if Elena would help Catalina with the lessons she abhorred, then Catalina would help Elena to become more graceful and look more pretty. She could not hide herself away.
Though there were times when Elena struggled not to hide, she slowly gained confidence thanks to Catalina, who profited in turn as she reached her fifteenth year and nearly succumbed to the natural rebellion of her age. As Elena used the earrings Catalina loaned her to remind herself that she was more than she appeared, so she gave Catalina a little talisman to remind her sister that they needed to make prudent, discreet choices, keeping Catalina out of scandal and their parents' displeasure.
Losing her sister to marriage with Antonin Deliambre made Elena wonder about what life would hold for her, but as she reached her own seventeeth year, a good look in the mirror made her realize that the family's ugly duckling had indeed become a swan. She was not the sensual beauty that Catalina was, but Elena had her own quiet, dark beauty as she finished growing into her face and body. The mind remained highly cultivated, however, and it was that mind surprisingly that drew Niccolo Montefiore's eyes to her after he was denied her cousin Angelia.
A few conversations with the Duke allowed the man to realize the intelligence behind the dark eyes, resulting in his choice of Elena for his bride. Now betrothed, Elena returned to Seravino with her future husband, the better to begin grooming her for her role as Duchess of Seravino. The irony of this is not lost on her, the more for knowing that her sister is the Duchess of Calandria.
Writing Sample:
Angelia eased back to study her twin cautiously. Aware that the Sandoval blood ran hot and strong in his veins, a marked comparison to her more aloof nature, she said nothing as he further expounded his line of thought on the matter of greater involvement in the court at Merignac. He suggested a long-term stay in Merignac, rather than returning to Talencia as she anticipated. So long a term away from home did not appeal to her, yet she knew that his suggestion was a valid one.
A soft sigh sounded to his words, her eyes lowering. "You have always been ambitious, Dante, but I wonder if your reach may extend too high and lead to a fall from which heights there is no recovery. And yet... I know that Father wishes to expand the Sandoval influence over Belmonte. He has little trust for Lord Belmonte, and dislikes his refusal to cease his slave trade." Her lips formed a grim line, thinking on it. The Sandovals refused to traffic in lives. "Proximity to the Queen and Court might pressure him to concede the point. Would you be content as Prince Consort, though?"
