Character Name: Jean-Luc Deveraux
Age: 45
Gender: Male
Birthdate: May 15th, 1382
City / Region: Bordelaix, Faucheux
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable]: Deveraux
Played by: Iain Glen
Appearance:
Though the Deverauxs strive to the height of royalty, none would find that evident in gazing upon Jean-Luc Deveraux. The man prefers clothing that indicates his station as a warrior rather than a Prince of Archades. Royalty, to him, is but a tool to get him further in life and thus he treats it as such. Jean-Luc is also a tall and broad shouldered man, still in peak physical condition despite the lines around his light brown eyes and the grey tinging his blond head. Though not always visible, Jean-Luc's body is a study in scars from a variety of weapons.
Personality:
Jean-Luc Deveraux has never been accused of being a congenial man. One never seeks him out for a polite or pleasant conversation, since it is well known that he rather detests small talk. Instead, he is renowned for being bluntly honest to a fault and a man that gets straight to the point. While words can carry weight, Jean-Luc believes that actions are far more indicative of a person’s personality and intentions. The Marshal of Archades is observant and calculating with just the right mixture of tall and strong to be physically imposing. The deep rumble of his voice only adds to the effect.
As such, it is not altogether surprising that most who meet Jean-Luc are not all that fond of him. Jean-Luc is rude, blunt and terse with most people he encounters, and even more so with people who are not worth his time. On the other hand, his wife and children might quietly disagree with such a swift judgment of the man’s personality. Deep within his muscled chest lays a heart that is rarely seen or even acknowledged by Jean-Luc himself. This is particularly evident in his interactions with his young daughters and the royal ladies within Bordelaix. As such, they often indicate to him that he is all roar and little bite. Jean-Luc, however, assures them that they are fortunate to have never witnessed the latter.
Jean-Luc is a military man, through and through. There is no terrain too difficult for him to master and he expects the army and levies of the kingdom to be capable of the same. His command style tends to be methodical, yet swift. It is not uncommon to see him studying a map and drawing on them, playing out a variety of scenarios. As such, games of strategy appeal to him greatly and he plays them when he can.
Though he’s taciturn and gruff, Jean-Luc is a loyal man. He has worked hard to obtain his present standing and will not do anything to jeopardize it. He even maintains a strong relationship with his children and nieces, though he secretly wanders if they deserve better father figures. In spite of all of this, there are times when he wonders if he has everything he truly wants… or is there more to life?
Background:
Jean-Luc was the fourth born child to Lucien and Sophia Deveraux, the third prince of the land. A surprisingly quiet child, his parents were worried their son would never learn to speak. Indeed, it was not until he was close to three years of age that finally began speaking, but most in short, terse statements. Indeed, it wasn’t until the age of seven that his tutors were able to get longer sentences out of him, though Jean-Luc was quick to point out that verbose speaking was pointless and waste of time. An orator, Jean-Luc would never be. Lucien was quietly relieved that Jean-Luc was not the crown prince, especially with his typically sour and blunt demeanor. Though Jean-Luc was one of few words, no one could deny his fiery temper and passionate nature.
Instead of worrying about how to communicate with others, Jean-Luc focused more on martial side of life, eagerly learning the various weapons in Archades. Though he was adept with a variety of swords and the bow, he found his preference for quarterstaffs and, ultimately, poleaxes. To Jean-Luc, they were a truly elegant and effective weapon. Little did he know that his weapon of choice would serve him in the years to come.
Jean-Luc had little desire to learn the royal ways of life, especially since he didn’t have the personality befitting a merchant for the family. Instead, he took off during his late teens with a band of mercenaries much to the chagrin of his parents. Lucien had tried for years to get Jean-Luc assigned to a knight as a squire, but such arrangements would only end in arguments and fist fights. The lad was too fiery and stouthearted to be confined to the rigorous rules and traditions of knighthood. The freedom and chaos of being a mercenary appealed him a great deal.
And so for five years, Jean-Luc travelled with the rough and tumble crew, taking on a variety of missions. Those stories are too long for this account here and to this day. One day, Jean-Luc came back to Sarcelles a changed man. Something had happened to him out there, but he refused to speak of it with anyone. The past was the past and Jean-Luc was ready to set that life behind him. The fire still lurked within his eyes, but it was tempered. No more was Jean-Luc the temperamental fearsome hothead of few words. He had transformed into a scarred man, watchful, more patient but no less confident and capable.
Jean-Luc threw himself into handling the military matters of the royal family. Under his watch, without the initial blessing of his father, Jean-Luc made certain the armies and levies were well equipped and well trained for any possibility. True, most of the peasants were farmers, craftsman and the like, but that didn’t stop Jean-Luc from whipping them into shape.
This led to a number of confrontations between Jean-Luc and the then current Marshal of the kingdom.
Two events then occurred that changed Jean-Luc's life. The current Marshal bordering on retirement and Lucien wished to test his youngest son's prowess. Thus, he sent him on a number of missions throughout the Kingdom. These missions included dealing with bandits, maintaining order and becoming more familiar with the Royal Army and the levies of the duchies. Both King Lucien and Crown Prince Alexandre were impressed by Jean-Luc's ability, thus declaring Jean-Luc Marshal when he was 27.
The second event was meeting one Carina Deliambre. She witnessed a certain grumbling 25 year old man handling himself rather poorly in social settings. Yet, there was something that appealed to Carina about the man, the certain inner fire and wondered just how much of his ire was just an act to keep people away. Carina fought fire with fire, proving just as heatedly passionate as Jean-Luc. On more than one occasion, other courtiers attempted to interfere that proved to be a folly in and of itself. One night, after a bit of drinking, they encountered each other, began one of their typical arguments and the passion evolved into something more substantial. They were betrothed less than a month later.
The years went on. Lucien passed away and Alexandre was crowned king. He agreed to keep Jean-Luc on as his Marshal. During that time, he fathered his four children which served to mollify his gruff nature… somewhat. The interactions with his royal nieces helped him do the same. Much to his chagrin, he became something of a strange father figure to the lot of them, though he never did anything to actively encourage such a relationship. Except, perhaps, to dote on them and help through the more difficult times in life.
Several years later, at the age of 40, Carina passed away due to illness. Though he did not show it, his wife’s death affected him deeply and to this day, he is more subdued than typical. His children worry he may still be depressed, though he assures them this is not the case.
For now, Jean-Luc is focused on his duties as Marshal and defending King and Country. The man is aware of the general disapproval of King Alexandre's recent actions, yet Jean-Luc feels compelled to be loyal to the kingdom and the Deveraux dynasty. Indeed, he would do anything to keep them safe...
Writing Sample:
Training was the key to survival. Jean-Luc was an expert infantryman, but only because he kept his form in top shape. Though the man was in his forties, he would never let his age ever hamper him. The rigorous schedule of practice, practice, practice kept his mind focused... or was it distracted? Ever since his children were growing older and his wife had left this world, Jean-Luc became increasingly intent on his duty and practice. It was one of the few comforts in this world he could truly enjoy, even if he pushed himself to the limit.
The training yard in the castle was ideally suited for his purpose and Jean-Luc had arrived early to practice his movements. Two weapons had been selected for this bout: a wood long sword and a wooden quarterstaff. The preference was for the latter, but since he felt he was lacking in the former, he opted to train with that weapon. Shield in hand, Jean-Luc was going through the movements in a decisive pattern against a guard. The guard was holding up well enough.
However, it obvious to who all who witnessed that Jean-Luc was holding back.
