Bordelaix was an endless maze of twisting, turning streets, some of which went on for miles while others ended abruptly. The alleys led places without seeming rhyme or reason and the lack of recognizable landmarks was no help either. For one ill accustomed to traversing foreign streets, navigating the city was akin to a nightmare. Joanna was hopeless without a guide, she decided as she found herself helplessly lost in trying to locate the markets. Her sisters were otherwise occupied and her brother was busy in tending to matters concerning the Duchy; she hadn't been able to locate Piero to see if he was up to joining her.
Determined to test her newly discovered courage, Joanna was prudent enough that one of the Ducal Guard escorted her; the man was no more knowledgeable on the city's layout than she was, but misery at least had company in floundering around the area. The man was thankfully patient with her darting to and fro like a frantic butterfly struggling to find the narrow aperture by which she could depart and escape to freedom. For now, he held his tongue despite the very obvious solution - asking for directions, content merely to follow Lady Joanna.
Inspiration struck her as she noted some finely dressed people and decided that they looked to be venturing towards the markets in search of... whatever people went to the markets for. Falling into step behind them, Joanna hoped she was doing the right thing. It was mortifying to be so easily disoriented. Duefuemi was not half so bad, never mind that she'd spent all of her life in those streets. She would just have to learn her way around Bordelaix too.
Now... which way did she turn, again?
