The camp slowly came to life with the rising of the sun; she could hear the quiet sounds of movement, the clanking of pots and pans from the camp kitchen and if she was not mistaken, the laughter and chatter of a child. Likely, the youngest daughter of the Baron had her energy recharged during the night and now she was starting on the new day's task of expending it. Nicolette often wished she still had the energy and excitement that a young child did in facing every day; that was the gift no child appreciated until they reached adulthood. Rising, she dressed in a fresh traveling gown, leaving her hair down and loose for a change as she emerged from the tent.
They would likely spend the day here, granting her an opportunity to talk privately with the Baron on the state of affairs within Desrochers and the kingdom at large. Too much time had passed since they had met, a mistake Nicolette wanted to correct forthwith and prevent from happening again. Collin Delacroix was a valued vassal and ally in the western part of the duchy; it was time she remembered those who supported their House and their claim. The Deverauxs would need that in the months to come.
Pushing a lock of hair behind her ear, she smiled to see Mariette seated in the distance with little Ariel, talking comfortably. Her sister had a gentle way with children and animals; they instinctively trusted Mariette and looked to her for care. The little girl was in good hands there; hopefully Marie could keep Ariel occupied and out of too much trouble while Nicolette spoke with Collin. They needed to go over the travel plans as well, she knew, leaving her hopeful that she could kill two birds with one stone. Efficiency was something Nicolette practiced faithfully.
Hailing one of the passing Delacroix children, she smiled and inquired as to where the Baron could be found, if he was awake yet.
