She took a moment to consider her sister's words, to recollect her own to see where she'd erred in explaining herself; seldom did the two sisters truly talk to know the innate meaning behind the words. Sabriyah did not immediately contradict Amirah, aware that she was asking a great deal of her sister in a single sitting. A single nod was given before she answered her sister quietly, "I should not ask that of you, so I apologize, Amirah. What I intended was that you seek to think and do for yourself, not for his approval.. or not solely for his approval. To weigh your options and look past the surface to understand what is truly being asked of you."
Sabriyah hoped she was explaining herself better, that she was sparking a fresh perspective in her sister. Not wanting to hammer the point needlessly, she drew in a breath to touch on the next part. "He is indeed our Caliph. No question of that, Amirah, but no leader is so worthy of blind obedience, especially when you know in your heart that a grave mistake has been made." And there was no doubt in her mind whatsoever that their dear father had seriously erred in his implementation, though not necessarily in his decision. "Respectful demurral is a kind of rebellion, but it also serves a purpose, my sister. It reminds the Caliph that he is as fallible as the people he leads, and that he is responsible for learning and growing as a leader from those mistakes."
Pushing to her feet, she felt the need to move a little. "I do not object to our father's seeking a new bride, nor do I object to his choice. Inayla will be a good wife to our father, and once she has learned to navigate the complications of managing the estates, she will prove a good consort as well." Tugging at a lock of her hair, Sabriyah grimaced, "What I object to is the lies and the hypocrisy he has displayed, the breaking of oaths so new they have not lost their polish, and the refusal to acknowledge that he did any of it. So yes, I feel it is wrong for us to follow him at times. He will lead us to war and chaos, Amirah. I have to speak while I still have a voice, act while I still have the freedom to do so, though it may cost me dearly."
For a moment, she wondered if she was making sense or making any kind of an impact on her sister. Suddenly feeling tired and somewhat old, Sabriyah quieted, crossing her arms tightly over her chest. "You may not think so, but I did this for you and for Leilah. Better that his ire falls on me, that disgrace falls on me than you both."
