Angelia, dear Angelia. Rafael had always loved her. Unlike Dante, she was much more approachable and even when he could not grasp what was at hand, he never felt like he was being judged and found wanting. He knew their father did not trust him with any matter of real import, and so far as he could tell, his older brother did not have much faith in him either. If anything, his eldest sister was the only one who appeared to believe in his potential.
And of everyone else, she was the only one who was taking the time to mentor him in that arena. And at this point in time, she was going more in that respect than anyone else had done in his entire lifetime. And he loved her more than ever for this.
When she spoke of the reasons to join even more tightly with the Montefiore, he did not even not. Truth be told, he hadn't known the Deliambre were contemplating leaving the alliance his family had been building. And without the Calandrians, there would be a glaring hole in their bloc. He knew the Gardiners and the Crown were not particularly close these days, but they would be separated from Nacimiento and Seravino by an expanse of water, an expanse they did not have the ships nor the land bridge to cross openly. So yes, they needed to fully secure the Montefiore support.
On the other hand, he had heard rumour of what had transpired between this new prospective bride and the Deliambre, and this seemed to confirm it. Her standing could have been damaged, and restoring it with a marriage into another main branch of a ducal family only made sense...
Then, he took a deep breath. He would have to give up Kattalin. How he would let her know this, he did not know. And how it would affect the potential alliance with Estersea, he could not even fathom it either, but he expected it would not be good, not unless Angelia and Dante could could effect any kind of damage control.
"All right. So, what do you need me to do? Get close to her?"
