Their initial encounter felt like ages ago, and yet, the scene still played out in his mind. The two of them had danced about rather expertly, both physically and verbally. Indeed, Dante had deemed her to be a most interesting and worth dancing partner in that regard. Why, his father might even be proud of him in that regard. However, he would likely not appreciate the thoughts and possibilities that were drifting through his mind. Joaquin had worked for generations for the Sandovals to rise to power, but it might not go exactly as he had envisioned.
Even with all of their carefully crafted plans, there were still too many variables. Would the Deverauxs submit so quickly? Would the dukes support their cause? Would the people allow such a transition of power? Were their others in plan that no one in the family had seen or even thought to consider? Indeed, it was enough to keep Dante up at night and ponder. He was forced to resort to assorted distractions to get any sleep! It made him wish everything was over. Right now, he felt as though were in a tempest and he was merely trying to push on through to sunny skies.
Push on he would. Where else could he go?
Evening had settled over the city in a starry blanket, cool and stark. The stars glittered like hard diamonds, seeming both beautiful and harsh all at once. Dante surmised it was the fall air, bereft of the hazy summer warmth, causing the effect. He was dressed appropriately true, eschewing lighter fabrics for heavier ones but looking no less princely as a result. While the gardens at night were enjoyable, it was not why he was there. A while ago, he an encountered the Princess of the Sun in this very garden, sparking an interesting conversation. It was his hope to encounter another this evening. However, he knew better than rely on the cloak of anonymity this time; everyone knew who he was. That was fine with him.
Onward he prowled, spying a lady moving through the gardens. But who was she?
