It took several days for the clippings and seedlings to arrive from Terre Verde. It was the waiting that bothered Donato the worst, which he found funny. The man was so used to going under cover and laying in waiting for days on end for the perfect moment to strike. This was different, however. In this case, he was the mercy of a courier that deliver what was needed and literally, all he could do was wait. The Dame and the Knight had gone over the plan several times that there was no point in doing so anymore.
To make matters worse, the plan was probably going to be tossed right out the window just as the meeting started. The enemy, for want of a better term, was cagey, crafty and tenacious. They have been after the Savarese secrets for generations. It was this particular aspect that made Donato nervous. Generation after generation of coveting the secret and now it was just … going to be handed to them. They would be suspicious, if not cautious. What if this plan failed?
Needless to say, Donato was quite restless when the day finally arrived. The seedlings had arrived safely and true to Dani’s word, one could not tell which ones were diseased. They all looked like perfectly healthy plants, and the clippings did, as well. The man stared at them thoughtfully at the back of the cart. Then, he finally pulled his gaze away and tugged at his leather armor. Yes, he appeared lightly armored, but chainmail was hidden beneath it. The tunic he wore underneath that kept it from clanking and jangling.
He wished Giotto were with him, but the risk was too great. No doubt the shaggy beast was pacing back and forth in their home, whining the whole while. Dani would probably go insane.
The man noted that the sun was part way down the horizon. The guards at the gate were keeping their eyes on him, but Donato merely gave them patient, if not friendly smiles. Therese would be showing up soon no doubt. Until then, he did his best to appear calm. Was it working?
