The planning meeting for the three Deverauxs took a good portion of the day, leaving Nicolette weary but satisfied at its conclusion that they'd made a good start on regaining a firm hand on the reins of the family. Too many unruly members had been allowed to go unchecked thanks to her father's increasing lapses in responsibility, creating more problems than the family currently needed. These plans were just the first step on the road to securing the Deveraux legacy in Archades for another generation, part of a much larger prospectus that the sisters, along with Jean-Luc and Julien, worked to put into play. Together, the four were proving a good team. Without them, Nicolette doubted she could accomplish half of what she hoped.
Jean-Luc held up his end, not only as Marshal but in advising her. Julien was proving to be a god-send in terms of counsel, information and clever thinking, yet at the base of it all stood Antoinette. Her sister was her rock, a strong and formidable buffer against the inevitable political storms that threatened to rage within the boundaries of the kingdom. Coming to rely on Antoinette more and more felt natural, though she strove never to take advantage of her sister. Honesty compelled the eldest Deveraux daughter to admit she did not know what she would do without Antoinette and prayed she would never need to discover that.
Retreating into the suite that Lord Gardiner provided for the elder two sisters, she knew they were expected for dinner and intended to change her gown into something more suitable. Pausing to steal a peek at Antoinette, Nicolette smiled to see the familiar tall, elegant blonde. "And what creation will you be gracing us with this evening, sister?" Unable to keep the tease from her voice, she leaned against the doorway to observe the myriad preparations that constituted Antoinette's dressing.
"Thank you, by the way," she added quietly.
