Her meeting with Lord Wilhelm, Lady Elsa and Alexander was complete, leaving the Romanov lord to make his investigations into the veracity of his sister's and uncle's allegations, but Nicolette could not relinquish the feeling of unease where the entire family was concerned. Antoinette had scoffed at the notion that the Romanovs were at the whims and caprices of ill fortune, yet the eldest Deveraux daughter trusted her instincts well enough to act without her sister's sanction. Recalling her cousin's solicitous concern over the Duke's youngest sister, she sent a page to request Pierre as her guardian for the day, the better to allow the two to discuss matters under the cover of normal activity.
Finding a sufficiently lengthy distraction for Carlotta was not easy, though Antoinette unwittingly served her ideally in this instance. Her lady in waiting was utterly trustworthy, yet Nicolette wanted no ears other than Pierre's to hear what was about to be said between them. Once she'd breakfasted and dressed, she urged Carlotta to seek out Antoinette and enjoy the morning together, leaving Nicolette seated in the sitting room of the guest suite she occupied in Rosedale Castle to wait for her cousin's arrival.
Taking the time to scribble a few notes in a journal kept for such purposes, the blue-eyed, golden haired Crown Princess lapsed deeply into thought. The time spent in Vanderhall had revealed certain facts and indicators to her that needed to be set down and examined, the better to attempt preparation for what might occur. Nicolette could not see the future - no one could, really - but she believed in being prepared for what loomed ahead of her, and she could no more deny that trouble was coming for the Romanovs than she could fly.
