Arriving back in Duefuemi later than expected, Joanna rose the next morning with her ears full of the news that Niccolo had brought his betrothed home from Nacimiento. Curious as to the lady, yet reluctant to impose on her so swiftly, she went in search of her younger sister. If anyone had time to prowl around and probe for information on a number of levels ranging from the Duke himself to the servants who unpacked the lady's trunks, delivered her meals and bath, and attended to her needs, it was Allegra. Trusting her sister to be a solid source of information and give her a reasonable impression of the future Duchess, she headed down the corridor in the hopes that Allegra would still be in her chamber.
Her feet made little noise on the floor, clad in soft-soled slippers, her dress for the day a simple and unadorned linen frock belted at the waist, and her thick brown hair confined in a brain. No one else seemed to be about, not even their brother, which meant either Joanna was awake far too earlier, or her family was growing slothful! Reaching her sister's door, she knocked lightly; if Allegra was awake, she would hear the gentle tapping. If not, there would be no answer and Joanna would return to her own rooms until a more acceptable hour.
Pressing her ear to the portal, she listened for any sounds of movement, smiling to herself. For a moment, Joanna wondered if Allegra did the same in her unending quest for information and testing her skills. She could very easily picture her sister doing that very thing...
