Even given this was no social call by his sister, Rafael could not help his adoration for her. She was intelligent, cunning, strong, beautiful, wise, kind. And she always seemed to know exactly what to say or do and when she mentioned his knighthood rightfully bestowed by their father but denied by the usurpers, his powerful and callused hand caught the dainty limb that touched his cheek and brought it to his lips. How he loved and admired her! She would make any man a formidable bride and be much of an asset to any house she would so join. And that very thought made a bitter jealousy rise within his breast.
However, letting go of his sister's hand, Rafael went immediately back to the matter at hand. Infiltrating the royal household with his siblings and getting to occupy key positions and exploit them later. It sounded simple and in theory would be effective. But he had reservations. As he had once been taught, even the finest battle plans crafted by the best generals never survived the first order to advance intact. And there was so little margin for error...
"You said we had allies in Bordelaix. Who is it we can trust? And if anyone had been bought by us, it means they can be bought by any who will beat our price." Rafael disliked mercenaries. He knew them to be a necessity but he far preferred sworn men, and the attendant expense to keep them armed, equipped, mounted, fed, trained and quartered than the fickle loyalties of men for hire. "I have no doubt in our abilities and our cunning. But I fear we may be betrayed by these people you mentioned."
Dante and Angelia were the planners and the strategists, but Rafael was the warrior. And such tactical details was where he could easily see possible points of failure, and he was far less than comfortable with those.
