"I am disturbed by the manner in which you're questioning our brother's choice of bride. When did you two stop trusting Niccolo's good sense?" Joanna turned from the window to regard her sisters with renewed calm. "As Elisa says, the choice is made, but listening to you both speak of Lady Elena makes it sound as if you are both convinced she is bent on the family's destruction or conspiring to ruin your lives. Do any of us know her so well as yet that we can make such a presumption? I did not think you were both so judgmental, or so paranoid. Discovering the truth is very disturbing. Let's hope Niccolo does not hear this out of us, because he would be beyond disturbed. He would be angry and definitely hurt if he felt we were anything less than welcoming of her." Hoping that her point had been made with her sisters, she shook her head and moved away. Only with her sisters did she feel safe in speaking her mind and revealing those emotions; no one else would be privy to them. These displays, as Elisa should know, were decidedly rare from Joanna; Allegra was the one prone to emotional outbursts and a lack of discretion.
She was admittedly getting angry with both of her sisters, wanting nothing more than to knock their heads together in the slim hopes that sense would filter in. This had obviously been a mistake; she had hoped to make peace, and instead, felt less peaceful than ever. Perhaps she had erred in thinking she had influence over her sisters. Joanna found it increasingly clear that both dismissed her as young, ignorant and innocent, a frustrating feeling indeed. It would do no good to rail at them about it, except to purge her ire.
