Sobered by his words, Kathryn took them in the spirit with which they were meant - spoken out of a brother's love and valid concern for her. "I understand your concern, Nicholas, and I'm grateful for it," she answered him, reaching over to touch his hand. "I want me safe too, but I also know that the higher I reach in terms of marriage, the greater the risks I must take. Whether I was to become Grand Duchess, or now the potential Queen of Archades, there is danger, there are enemies and opponents. But you've also taken care that if the danger grows too great, we are not bound to the agreement, yes?"
To her way of thinking, Nicholas's demand gave her an escape clause in the betrothal agreement if the Remingtons felt at any time that the risk outweighed the benefits. She wondered if Nicholas realized that was the sort of thinking and planning that would render him a skilled Grand Duke, opting to speak of it later, when decisions were made and peace restored. She focused back on his voice, amused by the snort and shrugged. "It seems she does not, to both points. If she truly wanted to correct his error, she would. If she truly felt we were important, we wouldn't be here." Kathryn indicated the inn suite in which they'd taken up residence. "We could almost argue that her lack of action all but forced us to the Sandoval side of things, you might say."
Her eyes lowered in the reflection on the matter, a nod given to his counsel. "I think I will do that. This isn't something to be decided in a moment's notice, since the rest of my life is effectively at stake." Kathryn paused, then commented quietly, "That brings up another matter for you to begin contemplating, Nicholas. The matter of your own marriage. Once you are confirmed as Father's heir, he will begin pressuring you to settle down and see about bringing your own heir about."
