Misgivings and doubts aside, the plan was carefully crafted and the details largely confirmed, allowing for execution to take place on the night the trio agreed upon as the most ideal for their purposes. Making the arrangements where necessary had not been easy, nor had any of the three expected otherwise. What they were doing was reprehensible at best, yet it was also unavoidable. There was no backing down now. Emery only prayed that the plan would go off without too many hitches for all of their sakes.
They took the evening to prepare, seeing Rosalinda off to the agreed-upon rendezvous point before the men returned to complete their efforts. A satchel was packed with the last of the items they needed, the rest sent on ahead with Rosa and the wagon, before the two made a point of obviously leaving the inn for a night of carousing. The tavern they selected was teeming with patrons, the taproom loud and boisterous as they settled in, presumably for a night of serious drinking. The rowdiness provided them ample coverage when the time came to depart and make their way towards the castle.
Accessing the passages had been relatively easy, thanks to caution, alertness and keeping to the shadows. Thankfully, there was no moon that night, though both men were concerned over the prospect of snow; should a considerable amount fall, their passage would be easily tracked. Moving steadily along the corridors with a dark lantern, it did not take them long to reach their intended destination - the chamber that belonged to the Princess Mariette.
Pausing to ascertain that the two women who resided in the room were soundly sleeping with the aid of a certain compound added to their evening tea, the two moved swiftly and as noiselessly as possible to secure the princess. She was warmly wrapped in both counterpane and cloak, both in a dark hue, with the hood pulled well over her pale gold curls. Severin swept the slumbering girl up and headed for the passage while Emery took steps to make it look as if Mariette were merely sleeping burrowed under blankets before following.
The passage into the room secured, the men made their way down to their existing exit, alert to any signs or sounds beyond the walls. In order to make their escape cleanly, one needed to slip out and guide the other, keeping watch out for sentries or stray denizens who might observe their departure. Their plan required at least four hours' lead time before the Princess was known to be missing; the ship was departing at dawn, requiring swift passage to Otterloh.
Emery felt he scarcely breathed until they were safely out of the castle and met up with Rosa at the wagon. With her aid, they gently tucked the little princess in the wagon's bed, propped against Rosa like an ill child. Blankets were laid over the two women before they started their journey, a long night's travel in the cold and lightly falling snow.
And with the dawn, they were aboard the ship, bound for Lindblum.
