An orchestra of music, laughter and light-hearted conversation filled the air in the lavishly decorated ballroom of the royal palace. The scene set before the woman’s eyes was something out of a children’s fairy tale, refined nobility dressed in vibrant costumes mixed in with scandalous mystery from the masks that covered their faces. Not knowing who was who was, in theory, the majority of the fun at such parties, or so she had been informed. In practicality, however, the Marshal was not entirely pleased by current circumstances…
Masked balls were not the safest parties to attend and less so when they were not in her own region. Therese had little control in the security of the palace, and while she had made a rather lengthy case on attending with her armor donned as a knighted escort that idea was shut down. While the woman was a knight she was also nobility and apparently there were certain duties that came with that such as trying to enjoy oneself at a...ball, or dressing up. This was the second dress she had been forced into in the past few months and while the other was not an utter failure this was bit more sparkly than she would have liked. The woman had however learned to tolerate the experience by reminding herself that she would be escorting Kattalin to the ball and thus was in a rather elaborate disguise. She doubted the knights would fully search her for the hidden daggers she had strapped to herself underneath the layers of vibrant red, black, and orange garment. While Kattalin was attending the ball are a snow princess Therese on the other hand was going to be a fire goddess or some such fire theme. While it wouldn’t be her first choice she found it an acceptable compromise for her disguise.
Things so far were going better than the Dame had expected as she stood with her cousin as a silent support. The woman had found that the capital for whatever reason held within it a great many people who liked to ask her many questions and if she were to ensure their safety while keeping her identity a secret (as that was the goal of the mask) it would be best for her to remain reflective rather than talkative. Also, Therese held far little patience for some of the nobility including an elderly nobleman who had just finished giving Katalin an earful of unnecessary and delusional ramblings.

... And that is when I brought my great sword down upon the head of the dragon!
Therese quirked a slender brow at the old man's words clearly not attempting to hide her disbelief as he made an unsteady swinging motion with his arms in a stance that would in no way be one of someone trained in combat. If he had been a warrior he had allowed himself to grow rather frail, and likely had been hit in the head one too many times. Although oddly enough his costume was that of a knight in elaborate gold finery with a golden mask shaped like a mask. Perhaps this idiotic story was somehow tied into his disguise?
(feel free to write the old man out, I just got a random inspiration lol)
