The first, and possibly worst, of it was over. The initial meeting of the families prior to the formal negotiation of peace between the Deliambres and the Montefiores had ended without bloodshed or a re-igniting of the hostilities. Certainly, tension was rife in the air, a fraught exchange of formal pleasantries and observations under critical eyes. For the sensitive Dove, the meeting was almost unbearable, especially in light of some of the looks exchanged between her sisters and other members of the Deliambre family. She had no idea what those looks were about, what they meant or what occurred, but the uncertainty had her seeking out her elder sister.
Caterina was nowhere to be found, likely off with Allegra. The two of them were rather alike in terms of ambitions, personalities and natures. No surprise that Allegra admired Caterina's fiery, independent spirit where Joanna respected Elisa for her more refined and elegant demeanor. Her elder sister's self-control and scholarly perspective was one she herself did not possess, yet she felt it was more akin to her gentler nature. Taking advantage of that and unable to sleep, Joanna slipped out of the room she shared with Allegra, leaving it for her other sisters if they wished to retire for the night while she was with Elisa.
Wrapped in a dressing gown, her feet still shod in slippers, she padded down the hall to where her sister Elisa's room stood and paused in front of the door. Frozen with indecision for a moment, she raised a hand to knock, then lowered it, repeating the motion twice more in succession. What if Elisa was asleep, and she awakened her sister? What if... what if Elisa was not yet there? Joanna thought she'd heard her sister return, but the potential to be wrong was ever present.
Squaring her shoulders, Joanna took a deep breath and made herself knock lightly to see if Elisa was indeed present, and willing to open the door to her younger sister.
