Death surrounds
My heartbeat's slowing down
I won't take this world's abuse
I won't give up, I refuse!
This is how it feels when you're bent and broken
This is how it feels when your dignity's stolen
When everything you love is leaving
You hold on to what you believe in.
Rousing with the faint light of false dawn, Nicolette knew she would not be able to return to sleep, not with her mind full of concerns, fears and realizations. Rather than awaken Antoinette, or her other sisters, she eased out of the cot and dressed quietly before slipping out of the pavilion. A nod greeted the knights and guards patrolling the camp, a gesture inviting one of them to fall into step beside her. She needed to walk, to sort through the myriad thoughts in her mind in order to make sense of them and to begin laying a plan, if one could be formed. The knight said nothing, merely shifted his sword into position and trailed her while she made her way through the morning mists.
Realization was proving painful to her this morning, yet Nicolette could not bring herself to confide the pain in her sisters or cousins, not yet. Relieved that her sisters were safe and unharmed, thanks in no small part to Master Miller and Sir Tristan, the ambush brought home an unvarnished, unadultered fact - the Deveraux family faced more resistance and danger than she'd ever truly allowed herself to accept. The damage imposed by her father was far reaching, affecting nearly every region of Archades and stirring feelings of resentment, resistant and rebellion. Knowing this meant she faced what might seem like insurmountable challenges upon taking the throne.
If indeed she would be allowed to ascend the throne, an event Nicolette felt increasingly doubtful would occur.
One decision resonated with crystalline clarity to her - once they reached Lockewood, the Deveraux family would need to meet and discuss their futures within Archades. If they wished to retain their royal status, they would have to fight like never before, knowing that the Sandovals were poised, prepared to strike at the merest sign of weakness. In truth, Nicolette could not blame them. She stood in their position when the Deverauxs had held the upper hand and exploited it. The difference was, she intended not to buckle beneath the pressure, even if it meant her death.
With that acknowledgement, she sighed and mustered a faint smile for the knight, who regarded her with concern. Nicolette laid a reassuring hand on his arm before settling into the camp chair before the newly stoked fire, deciding that her thinking was best done here. Once she knew just who her fellow soldiers would be on the front line of Fate, then they could begin what would undeniably be a battle of epic proportions, one they had to win at any costs.
She would stand and fight. It was time to see who would stand to fight with her.

This is how it feels when you take your life back
This is how it feels when you finally fight back
When life pushes me I push harder
What doesn't kill me makes me stronger
