Much as she dreaded the truth of his words, there could be no denying that Piero was correct. They were of a powerful noble family, an influential family, and thus were in the thick of the schemes, machinations and plots of those who sought to gain within the royal court. Lowering her eyes, Joanna listened with a slow nod of her head. The reminders of her duty and responsibility, both as a Montefiore and sister to the Duke were why she sought her pious cousin's counsel. Piero had a gift for putting matters into perspective for her, making her understand why her course traversed the way it did. Finally lifting her eyes to meet his, she smiled weakly. "I know you are right. May Paternos forgive my weakness and my selfishness in this. I will go, as Niccolo asks, and do my best to see that peace comes of these talks." More than that she could not be sure of doing, but it was a beginning.
Picking up her watered wine, she sipped carefully, mindful to keep her mind and her wits about her. Overindulgence was a sin, especially when so many wanted for even the basics, but she made a point of tempering her wine with bread and cheese. "Perhaps I will look into the annals more so that we both can go into this with better knowledge... I confess that I have neglected that portion of my studies. Shall I keep notes to share with you, cousin?" She looked hopeful at the idea of being able to do something for Piero; he was forever helping her. Joanna wished to repay some of those many kindnesses, if she could.
