An unexpected missive arrived from their 'neighbors to the east, sending the Grand Duke of Montenoire into a contemplative mien. After reviewing the contents and brooding over it nearly for an hour, he'd sent for his eldest son and daughter to discuss the letter and what actions to take. Having handed the letter over, Arthur opted to give the pair a chance to speak privately between themselves about it, advising them to relay their decision to him over lunch before he sauntered out in pursuit of another ducal matter.
Left silent in her father's tumultuous wake, Kathryn glanced down to the heavy vellum in her hand with its elegant script and embossed, gold-dusted seal. Purple wax was a novelty, a sign of considerable affluence. Impregnated with gold, the seal clearly bespoke itself of royal nature. Her fingers brushed over it absently, feeling the raised flower that was the sigil of Deveraux before she glanced to her brother, the putative heir of Montenoire.
Without a word, she extended the letter for his own perusal and opinion, keeping her thoughts to herself for the moment. He had a yen to travel, she knew, and this held all the promise of a grand adventure, one their father advocated for a change. Kathryn had a feeling that Nicholas would all but leap at the chance to escape the responsibility on his shoulders as the Duke's heir and enjoy himself lavishly in Archades; she further had a sneaking suspicion that he might actively seek a reason to remain in the foreign realm and defer to her as their father's heir. Hardly an attractive prospect, but that was the reality of her brother.
Leaning back in the chair, she studied him with eyes the same vibrant blue-green as the waters surrounding their home as she waited for his reaction. Kathryn was interested in going for a number of reasons, not the least of which was new trade opportunities, a change of scene and a chance to expand their family's interest, but she refused to travel without him. Would he go?
