This was not what Ruadhan had been expecting of the fall season. What he had been expecting was a final honey harvest, getting the apiary for winter and celebrating the family's good fortune. Indeed, it had been a rather good year for them. The hives were being particularly productive, the business deals he had set up were proving lucrative and he easily predicted that the coming winter would be comfortable, no matter how chilly it was going to be. Then this bollocks had come along...
Then again, he supposed that he could not be surprised that it happened. The Cruachs had been far too quiet for their own good and Ruadhan just knew that they would be planning something. That and he supposed he should feel blessed that he had been in a position to stop the Cruachs from going too far with with their plan, but ... all things considered? He'd much rather be settled in his damned hall quaffing deeply from a fine mug of honey ale. But, that was not the cards, so there was no sense in whining about it.
After the battle, the Connells retreated from Bordelaix at least a dozen miles and settled decided to settle into a quiet inn on the road. Most of the nobles and merchants would have reached the city by now. Though there were rooms, the established focused more on being a tavern for the farmers in the surrounding countryside. It sported a number of people, but it would given Ruadhan a good ear for rumors and a good set of eyes for more strangers. This was especially the case when he gave the innkeeper a hefty bribe and a promise to buy the regulars two drinks.
Several rooms were rented out, though it made him wince a bit at how deeply he was cutting into his purse to do this. It would all be worth it in the end. Eirian and Regan were given their own room, so that the latter could proper tend to the former. Only after everyone had gotten sleep for the night did Ruadhan decide to take a visit to the pale blond pretty. Breakfast had been served by then. Ruadhan knocked heavily on the door to the lasses' room, and Regan allowed him, quietly excusing herself afterward.
