Beautiful days were temptation incarnate for the Crown Princess, urging her to abandon duty for a brief time and escape out into the sunshine and crisp, fresh air. Autumn held its beauty, painting the trees in glorious colors that dazzled the eye, adding a fragrance to the air that scented of spice and smoke. Each season held its appeal to her, and when she was in that season, it was her favorite.
Today, the siren song proved too strong for her to ignore, excusing herself from duty for a few scant hours. Citing a need to clear her head and gain some exercise, Nicolette left the palace in her sister Antoinette's capable hands and called for her mare to be saddled. A pair of Clavigers were mounted and ready, waiting for her when she arrived in the courtyard after changing her clothing. Accepting aid from the stablehand in mounting, the trio swiftly rode out of the palace grounds and through the city, headed for the lakeside.
Once they arrived, the trio dismounted to water the horses and allow them to rest. Agreeing to stay within the line of sight, Nicolette opted to walk for a time along the lakeshore. Doing so allowed her to empty her mind and recharge, to enjoy some temporary respite where she could return, feeling refreshed. It was precisely what she needed, and with no one but the three of them as far as the eye could see, the peace was welcome.
Spotting a solitary, shady tree ahead in a panoply of gold, she decided it appeared a perfect place to sit and contemplate the water in semi-solitude. Picking up her skirts, Nicolette hurried towards it, finding a cradle-like seat between two roots, settling into it with a content sigh as she closed her eyes and rested her head against the trunk.
So nice to be alone... and just herself.
