The situation was growing deadlier by the second. Dante’s predatory instincts took over and demanded survival of those most precious to him. The man’s grip on Kathryn’s hand tightened as he weaved through the frightened crowd adroitly. Once he was at Angelia’s side, he turned to urge Kathryn onward. He could see her seeking out her brother. “He’s with Kattalin,” he told her significantly and in that moment, he heard his brother yell out in alarm. Dante turned just in time to see a crossbow bolt imbed in Sebastian’s neck. That bolt would have struck Kathryn were he not there. “Go!” He yelled at her while easing his brother to the ground. He was gone.
Lifting his head at a cry, he saw Catalina trying to help Lorenzo and Angelia grasping her in turn. “Go! Catalina, fly! We must fly!” Taking no arguments from either of them, he pushed them both into the hallway and started to run himself. It was not long before he heard the sounds of fighting. Demetrio Montefiore had taken up a sword and was fending off two guards at once to safeguard their passage.
Within moments, the fleeing group emerged from castle proper to find Gabriel ushering them toward the portcullis. The women fled out first, but Gabriel seized Dante’s arm before he could leave. “Where’s my brother?” The man asked harshly. Dante looked behind him and blinked. “I swear, he was right behind me.”
The Blackthorne looked back toward the castle, clearly weighing his options. “Come with me. We must start the plan. It is the only hope for your brother’s survival. You have work to do.”
Gabriel jerked his head toward Dante, his eyes full of murder and rage. After a moment, he nodded stiffly and both fled the castle. “You know what to do,” Dante told him, and as soon as they exited the castle walls, Gabriel vanished into the darkness to do just that.
