Map Room, Waverly Castle.
Meical moved slowly down the wide staircase from the stone corridor of his families chambers. He had met with his father Gareth. The meeting short and to the point. His fathers injuries limited it's length. However Meical's path was indeed clear. Gareth regretted to Meical his decisions regrading House Vaughn's standing on Vulcanis. Gareth set forward to task Meical, his heir to repair as much as he could of it. Gareth would remain at Castle Waverly to mend and attend to matters locally. Meical would prepare for the issues at hand.
With his trusted friend Alleck following behind him he entered a large main gathering hall. His wound smarted a bit with every step, however he knew he must exercise the leg for it to heal completely. Dressed in loose fitting clothes of a common nature he was observed by a few who passed the great hall conducting their daily tasks. It was impossible for those who observed the large man moving slowly in heir midst not to know who he was. He was greeted by a few words and smiles as they passed. Meical smiled in return nodding his head. Off the great room was an alcove that lead to the Library annex. The annex was used as a classroom at Waverly for a rather large group of children several hours every day. Shelves of texts lined it's walls and large windows brought a cascade of afternoon light across the tables and desks.
Alleck moved forward to a large Oak double door and drew them open, revealing a smaller room well known to Meical. The map room much was smaller than the Annex but well lit by standing candle holders. One smaller window was placed surrounded by racks of maps and ledgers. A large table and several large chairs stood at the rooms center. Meical had spent considerable time in this room as a younger man, he was tutored here in the map room by senior clan members in studies that were required for his future. Know the room needed a good cleaning and dusting off. As Alleck lit candles several attendants arrived removing dust covers and performed a quick sweeping out of the place. A large tray of food and Wine arrived and placed on a long cupboard just inside the door.
Illumination, food and an open window brought the room back from it's gloomy condition in just a few minutes. A smile crossed Meical's face, he was close to this place, and it was good to return to it. He leaned over the massive table looking down at stacks of reports and messages. Many were from local clan wardens reporting on incidents and financial collections, trade appointment requests and the transactions that were occurring. Meical waded into the stack and focused on getting a clear picture of what had been going on since his fathers absence. He began by sorting all messages concerning agricultural stores and condition of the current harvest that was under way. He observed low crop yield's and lack of wagons as one of the first issues that would need his attention. The resent conflict had created wide spread destruction and uncertainty in travels on the island. Crops of landowners were damaged and several required repair and funds to cover the loss of replanting these areas come spring. Food Stock and commerce was very low. It was troubling to him. The land was abundant in game still, and the main reserve would have to be opened to provide support for the people before the winter set in. Grain was low for herds that existed. He would have inspire trade of surplus livestock to supplement the grain for bread.
An hour passed quickly, Meical lost in thought of the current conditions. Alleck remained busy by sending messages to wardens and business folk requesting meetings and updates that Meical requested. With every hour stability and organization was regained. A letter was sent to the granaries to gather as much goods as possible of good condition. The cost would be supported by funds and grants of the clan. A premium price was to be offered for these goods. The treasury was still strong and needed to feed the people through the winter. Meical added a warning to the document, that all transfers of goods would be closely monitored. Theft or fraud would be considered a high crime and violators punished harshly. It was drastic but needed. Should the need arise he would carry out the punishment by his own hand.
Meical stood from the table and stretched. He tied back him long hair and winced as a annoying pain shot up his leg. Alleck observed his discomfort. “Does the wound trouble you my lord? I can sent for your physician if you require it.”
Meical shook his head. “No need for the crone at the moment. The twinge reminds me of a Bowman out there somewhere that rejoices. That's what vexes me. However I thank the maker that his aim needs considerable improvement.” Meical smiled and returned to his chair. With immediate concerns quickly covered Meical directed some of the requests and reports be taken to his father for review. These matters would be handled locally by his father Gareth and assisted by trusted family members. Meical took a deep breath and consumed a large glass of wine and several Sweetbreads. Alleck had returned, nodding that the correspondence had been delivered to Gareth as Meical had instructed. He returned to the large table. The next instructions given caught Alleck by surprise.
“We will travel North. I feel a much needed meeting with the Ruadhan Connall is necessary. So please prepare a travel plan. The swift route is by Sea for the majority of the way. Not of my liking but by far the safest. I would say a small party of escort. Insure the baggage light as speed will be needed. I believe the use of heavy amour will not be needed for this trip. It would not send a peaceful message I desire.”
Alleck took swift notes. “I shall select Ten of our best men my lord.”
Meical smiled. “Pick Ten of our best warriors Alleck. Always remember the skills of our womenfolk. And I think that you should be allowing that some are much needed here at this time of harvest. I'm sure a few skilled scouts would indeed be helpful. A swift vessel, remounts along the way and good weather should be our main goal here my friend.”
Alleck nodded. “I shall make it so my Lord. Will your wife and son's be traveling with us?”
The Lord leaned back in his chair. “That Alleck is yet to be determined. If Sinead is confident she can make this journey so be it. If so bring our best physician with. I would prefer to just one of my sons accompany us just in case of perils.” That being said Meical rose and prepared to find Sinead to inform the Lady of his plan to travel to Glenn Tuathas to meet her Cousin Ruadhan.
