True to her word, Nicolette sent word to the vassals of the crown to attend the King, her and her sisters at an official court the next day. Conscious that more than a few might have overindulged the night before, she allowed for the court to take place in the afternoon, deeming it sufficient time for the lords and ladies to recover their wits and render themselves presentable to their King and Crown Princess. Today would be the day that Alexandre officially transitioned the crown to her as Regent; he would retain the title of King until his death, per the agreement concluded between Council, King and heir.
Privately, she was relieved for that agreement. She was not ready to plunge headlong into the role of queen; as Regent, she would have time to adjust to the pressures of the throne and learn how to handle the machinations of the ruling dukes and counts before she donned the crown. Her challenges were great enough now, not the least of which was informing the dukes and counts of this transition and receiving their renewed oaths.
Seated beside her father on the dais in the throne room, Nicolette once more wore the coronet of the heir on her golden hair, waiting for her sisters and then the assembled vassals to enter. Any nerves felt were artfully concealed under a mask of serenity, her hands resting lightly on the arms of her chair, slightly less ornate and lower than her father's throne. Two seats sat to his left, intended for Mariette and Juliette, while one on her right was for Antoinette. She had every confidence that Antoinette would be there and prepared; instructions to the younger two had been given, trusting they would comply.
Last night had been a dance of celebration and of enjoyment; a new dance began today, of shifting power and allegiances.
