The Grand Gathering of the Clans was an impressive event, or at least, Ruadhan thought so. That all of the clans in Vulcanis ventured to Llywn Newyth with the hope of setting aside all differences and discussing important matters could prove quite the spectacle. Oft times, the gathering was tame, but it was not uncommon for spats to arise between the clans. Clan Connell, thankfully, had no such disputes this time around. The MacDonoughs were still willing to accept Ruadhan as their Laird, despite his less than conventional means for gaining their respect. No doubt, Merthen Cadag would have heavily disapproved.
But what he didn’t know, couldn’t hurt him.
There was little business for Clan Connell this time around, other than to discuss the productivity of their apiaries and successful trade dealings with the Deverauxs. Some clans were somewhat uneasy dealing with the royal family in the north, but Merthan, as usual, reassured them all would be well and Vulcanis would maintain relative peace and prosperity. This news would have comforted Ruadhan were not for the conspicuous absence of the Cruachs. Neither hide nor hair of them could be seen this year. It troubled Ruadhan.
There were still several days remaining in the Grand Gathering and Ruadhan had a need to escape. A late evening trip down to the city proper was in order. He intended to get lost in the throng of commoners, enjoying their time in the taverns with song, drink and food. Sometimes it was nice to simply blend in and remain relatively unnoticed. Thus, donning darker and less conspicuous clothing, the man was picking his way carefully through the High Laird’s castle with the intent of making his ‘escape’ through the courtyard and then the gardens.
Surely, it would be an easy feat!
