Thinking on matters involving her family brought to mind the very palpable distance between her sisters and each other. Unwilling to permit that to continue, knowing it was a vulnerability, Nicolette sent notes to each of her sisters the night before, requesting their respective presences at a family breakfast the next morning. While she harbored no illusion that the meal would be pleasant, she intended to impress upon her sisters that they were best working together. Their paths, in this instance, were parallel, and she wanted to be sure they walked in unison.
The arrangements were easily made - honestly, Nicolette did not know what she would do without Carlotta - and the table stood ready to receive the four royal daughters. China and crystal sparkled in the morning sunlight, the table crowned with a low arrangement of late summer flowers. The food would be served once each arrived, as would the tea she requested, and the fruit juice to accompany the meal.
Nicolette stood at the open doors to the balcony, savoring the feel of the morning sun on her skin and the caress of the balmy air. Last night's storm had done wonders to begin cooling down the temperatures, though she chose a linen dress of rich blue again. Afternoons could and would prove warm yet. Her hair was in a loose braid, woven with matching ribbons, an informal look for a family meal. She didn't want the strain or the tension of formality, not with her sisters. They were family.
It was time to remind them of that.
