“Oh! So close!” Marcus cried in delight as he finished rolling his dice and was third out for the count this time around. Brent and a few of his other family members were mixed in around the dice table as they each took their turn placing their bets and trying to win it all.
The grand hall had been transformed into a gaming room for the evening. Multiple tables fashioned all sorts of games from cards to dice, and the flow of wine, mead, and ale imported from other duchies and through Fendris Port had finally come in for all to enjoy. This table that Marcus was playing at happened to host the game of Hazard, and Brent acted as the house for this occasion.
“If I didn’t know any better, I’d swear you were cheating.” Marcus replied jovially as he shifted the dice over to the next player and gave his cousin a smug look.
To that Brent could only scoff and reply, “That’s because you have no talent for rolling dice. Stick to your card games where you’re better at counting them.”
Clutching at his heart the duke replied, “You wound me so, cousin.”
But the both of them brushed it off with laughter as they clinked wine goblets and finished the contents within. It had been a grand night, and while some had opted out of the games to enjoy the fresh air many were here tonight to try their luck. Claudia had done an amazing job at pulling together multiple things for them to do, but Marcus feared calculating the tab when all was said and done. However, rumor had it that Antoinette had found herself a Vasilian fashion designer and was already pouring some of that money back in their coffers by way of ordering dresses and fabrics of all assortments.
Clapping a hand on his cousin’s shoulder, Marcus took his chips and pocketed them while saying, “I think I shall take your advice on that and see where else I can do some proper damage.”
“You do that, cousin. And while you’re at it find yourself a wife.” Brent replied with jovial smugness.
Marcus ruffled Brent’s hair and walked away, grabbing a refill on his wine he made his way over to the Basset table and looked at the player next to him with a smile. “Are you winning?”
