Morning mists burned away with the first touch of the sun, bathing the city of Llwyn Newyth in golden light, bestowing an aura of peace that was not likely to remain. A single rider bearing the white flag of truce approached slowly, allowing himself to be seen well in advance. He wore the sigil of the High Laird, his eyes clear and his weapon sheathed, a sure sign that he approached as courier, nothing more. There was no call for violence to be done here and now.
The city was awake and moving, but with a wary hush about it. Tension and fear shimmered in the air as the courier moved through the streets to where Vortigern Cruach and his Clansmen established themselves as putative claimants to the High Laird's seat. The people were watchful and wary, aware that the Cruach laird had moved right when the city seemed its most vulnerable, but hope shimmered in a few eyes that met his. Surely Lord Cadag would not allow this to stand unchallenged.
The man sighed to himself and straightened in his saddle as he drew closer to where the Cruachs were settled, prepared to answer the challenge that came. Unsurprised by it, he reined in his mount, one hand sliding the slim pole holding the flag of truce into his stirrup before removing a sealed scroll to hold it up in clear view. "I am Donal Cadag, clansman of Clan Cadag. I come with a request for Laird Cruach to parlay. Will he admit me so I may present the request and hear his response?"
The sentries exchanged a look before sending one off to seek the Laird for his response, leaving the courier to remain mounted and silent. He said nothing and did not surrender the scroll, instructed to give it to none save Vortigern himself, but watched intently as he waited.
