Anticipation carried Kattalin on its wings since she'd heard there was to be a masquerade. Learning that the evening was the brainchild of its hostess, the Princess Royal, she'd put considerable effort into her costume, a figure well known to the children of Estersea for her yearly return to the earth. The Snow Princess, daughter of the Snow Queen, could only return to her mother from captivity with the first snowfall, and once the crocus blossomed, she had to return to that captivity. The tale had been one of her favorites from early childhood, making the costume almost a foregone choice.
Attired in the soft white and blue gown that floated about her, a lacy white mask tied in place, she entered the ballroom with a smile curving her lips to see the magic that the Princess Royal wrought. Antoinette was without equal when it came to hosting events, that could not be denied after tonight. There were subtle touches everywhere that showed the Princess spared neither effort nor expense to make the evening utterly unforgettable. If she knew which among those collecting in the ballroom was Antoinette, she would congratulate the Princess on a coup of the highest order. Alas, until midnight, Kattalin could only wonder.
Moving through the throng, she accepted a glass of sparkling wine from a passing servant, sipping as she took up a place not too far from the dance floor. Already, she could hear the music drifting down, inviting couples to take their positions in anticipation of the evening's first dance. The excitement came, she knew, from not knowing who would ask her to dance, or how often. The more rigid rules of courtly behavior were relaxed tonight, creating an atmosphere of pure pleasure. It was just the sort of night made for a certain rogue...
Was he here? And if so, would she know him when she saw him?
