Ruadhan and Merthen would not likely approve of her efforts, yet Eirian had a feeling that additional progress might be made if the women on both sides of the line were to talk. Though she accepted she could face grave disapproval from both Lairds - three, if she counted Laird Penrose, since he was likely to side with the men - she opted to take the chance and send a note to Sinead, requesting a private meeting.
Uncertain whether the lady would agree to meet with her despite their shared connection in Ruadhan, Eirian extended the invitation to any Vaughn or Cruach women whom Sinead felt might have a desire to see the conflict brought to an end without further bloodshed. She suggested that they meet in the early morning, just past dawn before the majority of the men in both camps were minded to stir their marrow bones. If Cruach and Vaughn men were typical of Vulcanis men, they enjoyed their leisurely mornings, especially after a raucous night.
The Cadag men tended to be more disciplined, as a rule, yet there had been some carousing the night before with Merthen's return to Vulcanis. Eirian had attended the celebration for a time, withdrawing before the hour grew late. It was not necessarily appropriate for her, particularly as the laird's unwed sister, to linger too long in the drinking, singing, and the like. The men deserved it, and she was not one to begrudge her brother's people anything.
Rising before dawn, she dressed and slipped out of the tent that was allocated to her, gesturing for one of the Cadag knights to accompany her to the meeting place. As they walked, Eirian heard the man's objections and protests, but hushed him with the promise that she would go directly to Merthen and confess once they were done. He grumbled his reluctant agreement, standing beside her as they reached the crest of the hill to wait and watch for the other women.
